Komen foundation has reversed its position on Planned Parenthood, and will continue funding the organization after all, issuing a statement that apologizes "for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives." The move comes after a week of online protest over the news that Komen would end a grant to Planned Parenthood to provide mammograms. It was not a move that Komen took lightly. The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg unearthed memos from December that show how the Komen foundation instructed its employees to "obfuscate the issues when confronted with questions about why Komen cut off funding to Planned Parenthood." The letters outline "updated eligibility requirements" that include changes in tax-exemption status and loss of federal funding, among other things. (via)

Bang! is a desk lamp with a gun-shaped remote controller. User can fire the "gun" to turn the light off. The light goes out and the lampshade knocks to the side, showing that it's been hit. smokey had surgery! he's doing just fine!

"The surgery went well with no surprises," said Dr. Darryl Millis, orthopedic surgeon and surgery section chief at UT Veterinary Medical Center. "Smokey is a very fit dog with good muscle tone."

Millis performed the 2½-hour operation Tuesday. A day later, Smokey was on the move, just not as quickly as usual.

over the weekend, he played in the par-3 tournament at old fort in the boro, and beat EVERYONE! 78 other people, including the pros! and he and his partner were the only ones to finish under par. AND he won the closest-to-the-pin prize on #8.

The 2nd annual OFMGA Par 3 Challenge had the Old Fort Golf Club showing it's teeth with cool and windy conditions making shooting a quality score very difficult. The team of Mark Kaiser and Richard Petrusha fired an awesome 2 under par 52 and were the only team in the field to best par. They also were the only team to win the "Beat the Pros" prize as Marty McCurry and Tracy Wilkins fired and even par 54. The two under par score might not seem that low but the conditions were brutal with very hard hole locations and tricky teeing grounds sprinkled throughout the course. (via)

spotted. from the fairway parking lot in red hook, the beginnings of the brooklyn crab shack! i was pleased to learn that the restaurant is being opened by the owners of alma, another red hook spot that is fucking delicious.

The space will encompass two decks overlooking the New York Harbor, so like Alma, it should boast unrivaled views. They'll serve seafood from up and down the Atlantic coast and will offer salads, soups, sandwiches, and a raw bar. There are also rumors of miniature golf. It's unclear how long construction should take—it's a major undertaking and all of the owners all have small children—but they hope to open by this summer. (via)

The New York City Subway is the only large subway or metro system in the world to maintain service to all its stations around the clock. The Manhattan district attorney’s office is investigating an accusation that Greg Kelly, a local television anchor who is a son of Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, raped a young woman in Lower Manhattan last October, law enforcement officials and Greg Kelly’s lawyer said Wednesday.

Police detectives initially interviewed the woman late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, one of the law enforcement officials said.

But because of the conflict presented by the Police Department’s investigating a sexual assault accusation against the commissioner’s son, the case was handed over on Wednesday to the office of the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr.

Mr. Kelly, 43, denied the accusation in a statement by his lawyer, Andrew M. Lankler, that was released Wednesday evening. (via)

Intending to reflect the epic nature of this NFL championship, a rematch of the 2008 Super Bowl, NBC commissioned composer Joel Beckerman to create an orchestral-rock hybrid of Williams' 2006 piece "Wide Receiver" for use during the game. Using a rock rhythm section and a 45-piece orchestra -- 90 percent of the musicians were from the New York Philharmonic -- Beckerman recorded a new 90-second version of "Wide Receiver" and newly composed music Thursday at New York's Avatar Studio for the Feb. 5 Super Bowl.

Beckerman described one version as dubstep, another as bombastic rock with percussion, and a third simply as "a percolating soundtrack." It's titled "Epic Matchup." "This year's game is expected to be the most watched telecast in history so NBC wanted it to be much bigger (than earlier versions)," Beckerman said shortly after the session concluded. "I did (an arrangement) in '09 that was much more a fanfare. This is more of an epic soundtrack." (via)
