laverne cox interviews cecile richards

in interview magazine:
COX: Speaking of LGBT rights, health care for trans people is a huge issue for me. How has Planned Parenthood worked to accommodate trans folks and trans health care?
RICHARDS: It's a growing area of health care for Planned Parenthood around the country. What we're seeing, I can say in the last couple of years, is just an explosion of access. It's only going to continue to grow. The other thing that is important to me, Laverne, and what we are really working on at Planned Parenthood, is how important it is for our patients to be able to go to a health care provider where they're not judged and they're not stigmatized and they're treated completely with respect. I was at a big dinner here in New York, and one of the most prominent transgender activists in the area of health care said, "It's sort of amazing once a Planned Parenthood health center opens up, it's like the Underground Railroad. Everyone knows."

Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs, "Atomic Number" (Anti- Records). With more than 30 studio albums among them, Neko Case, Laura Veirs and k.d. lang understand how to build a song, be it a torch-and-twang ballad by lang, a Case-built Brill Building bruiser or a Veirs-ian folk-pop shape-shifter.
Now the artists have united for a project simply titled "case/lang/veirs," in which the musicians play songs they wrote together. This week, they released the first of them. It's called "Atomic Number," and if the song's any sort of portent, fans are right to mark the June 17 release date on their calendars. (via)

CHEATER!!!!!!!!111111111

Maria Sharapova announced Monday that she failed a drug test at this year's Australian Open, where she'd reached the quarterfinals before losing to Serena Williams. Sharapova said she received a letter from the International Tennis Federation on March 2 that said she'd tested positive for meldonium, a drug she says she's been taking since 2006. The drug, which is also known as mildronate, became illegal for pro tennis players on January 1, and Sharapova said that while she received an email from the World Anti-Doping Agency about changes to its tennis program, she did not look at it. 04 March 2016

that's better.

Nathan: TV Guide had done a piece on the show: “The Golden Girls—Is it still as good as it was the first year?” And they asked random people what they thought of the show, and this one housewife said she didn’t think the show was as good and that Bea Arthur’s character wasn’t as interesting. They mentioned her by name—Mrs. Betty Johnson, Sioux Falls, Iowa. So Bea reads this at lunch and then gets on the phone and asks information for this Betty Johnson’s number. And she calls her. And she picks up, this TV Guide woman, and Bea says, “This is Bea Arthur, and I want to talk to you about what you said in TV Guide.” The woman was horrified. She said she was misquoted. “I didn’t mean it. Is it really you? I love the show. I take it back.” And Bea goes, “That’s what I thought. OK, that’s better.”
Hervey: And then Bea said “That person’s going to go tell everyone that I called her, and no one’s going to believe her.”
from this oral history of the golden girls.

new octopus hotness!

Late in February, the Okeanos Explorer made the season's first dive, almost 2.5 miles down into the ocean, northeast of Hawaii's Necker Island. Down in the depths, the Explorer's remotely operated vehicle happened upon "a remarkable little octopod sitting on a flat rock," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports. It was small, ghost-like and almost definitely a species that no scientist had ever seen before. (via)
