When The Guardian recently asked Zaha Hadid about the 500 Indians and 382 Nepalese migrant workers who have reportedly died in preparations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the architect behind the al-Wakrah stadium responded:

“I have nothing to do with the workers. I think that’s an issue the government – if there’s a problem – should pick up. Hopefully, these things will be resolved.”

Asked whether she was concerned, she then added:

“Yes, but I’m more concerned about the deaths in Iraq as well, so what do I do about that? I’m not taking it lightly but I think it’s for the government to look to take care of. It’s not my duty as an architect to look at it. I cannot do anything about it because I have no power to do anything about it. I think it’s a problem anywhere in the world. But, as I said, I think there are discrepancies all over the world.” (via)

The 2012 London Olympics Aquatic Center is now open to the public! They took the bulky seating risers off the sides, replaced them with fog-proof glazing and voila. Now regular flabby Londoners can take a dip where THIS happened.

Zaha's first NYC building

she designed this swoopy apartment building for Related next door to the high line (natch) in west chelsea.

a dress that came out of a 3D printer

Dita Von Teese (of course) debuted the first ever wholly 3D printed gown at the Ace Hotel on Monday, designed by Michael Schmidt. Looks like a Zaha project.

  The dress is made of powdered nylon, a flexible, fabric-like substance that's most often used for architectural modeling (and -- who knew? -- is comfy enough to wear). The dress was then polished and lacquered black and covered with 12,000 black Swarovski crystals.

you KNOW that cameron sinclair and sean griffiths wouldn't have had the balls to to say these things to Zaha's god like face (see left). even if these things are true.

the story is she didn't show up to this event that she was headlining, and sent a lowly representative. shit hit the fan.

sinclair: Inviting Zaha Hadid to talk about ethics in architecture, he said, was like getting Robert Mugabe to discuss human rights. Her practice's architecture, he explained, was the worst sort of top-down, starchitect offering imposed by the powerful on the powerless.

griffiths: Arrogance, he said, was not necessarily a bad thing; the problem with the Hadid projects was their "banality", the fact that they were "bad work".

The Bridge Pavilion design stems from the detailed examination and research into the potential of a diamond shaped section - which offers both structural and programming properties. As in the case of space-frame structures, a diamond section represents a rational way if distributing forces along a surface.
