crossroads - radiolab's robert johnson story

For years and years, Jad's been fascinated by the myth of what happened to Robert Johnson at the crossroads in Clarksdale, Mississippi. The story goes like this: back in the 1920s, Robert Johnson wanted to play the blues. But he really sucked. He sucked so much, that everyone who heard him told him to get lost. So he did. He disappeared for a little while, and when he came back, he was different. His music was startling--and musicians who'd laughed at him before now wanted to know how he did it. And according to the now-famous legend, Johnson had a simple answer: he went out to the crossroads just before midnight, and when the devil offered to tune his guitar in exchange for his soul, he took the deal.

Producer Pat Walters bravely escorts Jad to the scene of the supposed crime, in the middle of the night in the Mississippi Delta, to try to track down some shred of truth to all this. Not because they really thought something spooky would actually happen, but because deep down, there's a part of this story that--as much as the facts fall apart--still feels kind of true

if you're wondering who is winning, just look to the sky

CNN has partnered with the Empire State Building to tally electoral votes 1,454-feet in the sky, with lights: "As each state is projected by CNN and electoral votes are allocated to the candidates, a vertical LED-illuminated 'meter' located atop the spire of the building will display CNN's running tally of the race to 270," the network announced, although good luck calculating the actual numbers from that. Because the mast is only so large, it "will be lit in blue and in red on two sides each to represent President Obama and Gov. Romney's respective electoral vote totals," further complicating things. "When CNN projects a winner of the presidential election, the tower lights of the Empire State Building will change color to all-blue or to all-red." Then it will all make sense.

le blues de memphis

“Le Blues de Memphis” is an incredibly cool 11-minute video tour of two iconic music studios. Made for French television forty-some years ago, it starts off at a Brook Benton session in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and then (after a quick stop at Elvis Presley’s Graceland) takes us behind the scenes at Stax Records—where Booker T. and the MGs are recording “Time Is Tight” and a slicker-than-silk, saxophone-playing Isaac Hayes is putting the studio’s horn section through its paces. Blues or no blues, this is joyous, eye-opening stuff. via
