abandoned smoky mountain stuff

yesterday, huffpo misleadingly posted a story about a hiker "discovering" an old abandoned town in the great smoky mountains of east tennessee. today, the tennessean snarkily responded that everybody who knows anything is aware of this place, which was a vacation resort before the area became national park'd.

regardless, i want to spend a night there.

wilbur the puppy-pig, you've stolen my heart.

this morning, i was perusing my nymag, and startled myself with an lol-in-public when i read this little neighborhood news item. i laughed because i envisioned his "energetic reaction" to look something like this.

when i got to work, i looked into the story of wilbur, and was delighted to find that he is just absolutely adorable.

Lisa Ortiz, assistant manager of the center in Manhattan, said workers there dubbed the pig Wilbur and pointed out that it wags his tail when called by name.
“He appears to be a pet because he was very friendly. He wasn’t charging, wasn’t snorting, wasn’t stamping his foot,” Gentiles said.
...
At the Manhattan center, hay was laid out on the ground for Wilbur. Employees had filled a small tub to be used as a bath, but most of the water had either been spilled or drunk.
...
On Tuesday morning, Wilbur snacked on vegetable- and fruit-flavored rabbit treats but shunned the morsels made with carrots as well as the whole carrots in its bowl.

dislikes: carrots, strawberries
likes: mixed treats for rabbits, lettuce, head-pets

FOUND!

The venomous Bronx Zoo Egyptian cobra that alarmed and delighted New Yorkers when it escaped from its enclosure was found today, ending a six day search for the celebrated snake.

The elusive snake was found "coiled, sort of secluded in a dark corner" about 9 a.m. a couple hundred feet away from the enclosure she had slipped out of, said Bronx Zoo Director Jim Breheny.

It was recovered by a Reptile House employee using "special tongs to grip the animal," Breheny said. (via)

so that's where it went!

the world trade center construction workers found my old-old-wooden-ship and my shoe that i misplaced in the 18th century!

On Tuesday morning, workers excavating the site of the underground vehicle security center for the future World Trade Center hit a row of sturdy, upright wood timbers, regularly spaced, sticking out of a briny gray muck flecked with oyster shells.
...
By Wednesday, the outlines made it plain: a 30-foot length of a wood-hulled vessel had been discovered about 20 to 30 feet below street level on the World Trade Center site, the first such large-scale archaeological find along the Manhattan waterfront since 1982, when an 18th-century cargo ship came to light at 175 Water Street.

The area under excavation, between Liberty and Cedar Streets, had not been dug out for the original trade center. The vessel, presumably dating from the mid- to late 1700s, was evidently undisturbed more than 200 years.
thx guys! i'll come by and get those after work!

RIP oil

this gem was on the wall of slim goodies, an egg place on magazine street in nola that was superb. it was surrounded by other, less final images of oil. i wonder what happened to him. there was a picture of obama with the owner a few feet down.
