the enclave

A few years ago we shared photographer Richard Mosse‘s unique infrared imagery that he had shot in The Democratic Republic of Congo for his series Infra. Taking advantage of an old type of Kodak film called Aerochrome, he infused new color into this war-torn and often forgotten part of the Earth.
Now he’s taken that project a step further by creating a documentary film called The Enclave. Shot entirely on 16mm Aerochrome film, the footage reveals both the unseen infrared bouncing off of the vegetation, and this too-often unseen “ongoing humanitarian disaster.” (via)

nErD aLeRt!

from november 7th to 9th 2014, the inner city of berlin will be temporarily divided by a light installation featuring 8,000 glowing white balloons, commemorating the 25th anniversary since the fall of the wall. ‘LICHTGRENZE‘ (border of light), will trace an approximately 15 km long segment of the former course of the wall that once separated the city in two. developed by bauderfilm and WHITEvoid, the luminous installation evokes the candle-bearing demonstrators throughout the GDR to emphasize their peaceful intentions, and acts as a visually powerful symbol for the magnitude the wall spanned and its bearing over inhabitants. 16 DAYS!!!

Tennessee will officially unveil a new alternative football uniform later this afternoon that features a shadowy charcoal gray jersey and pants complemented by orange numbers and checkered undershirts.
The new uniform represents a much more dramatic shift than the smaller, cosmetic changes released last month.
Adidas posted a photo of the new look on its website this morning. The Volquest website was first to report the new uniform earlier Thursday. The Vols will officially unveil the gray uniforms at the team's annual preseason media day at 3 p.m. (via)
the gray color is called "smokey". H2D if you ask me!!!!

fortnightly boat.

read this piece about the evils of the cruise industry and the beauty of charleston:
Like several communities that hug the nation’s coastline, Charleston is struggling to balance the economic benefits of cruise ships against their cultural and environmental impact.
Last week’s debacle aboard Carnival Cruise Lines’ Triumph, in which an engine fire stranded 4,200 people in the Gulf of Mexico for five days, has done little to deter those civic leaders who believe that building a new $35 million cruise terminal will be a great boon for this port city. (via)

The Boneyard, aka the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, accumulates retired aircraft for maintenance and parts. Directed by Andrew Breese, this video from the U.S. Air Force's Airman Magazine pairs beautiful time-lapse video of the Boneyard with interviews with retired pilots. (via)

it has recently come to my attenshion, that iiiii liiiike filum.

Samsara, a "sequel" to the 1992 non-narrative film Baraka will be released in theaters this August. I loved Baraka, and I can't wait to see Samsara (though I could do without that title font).
And if you're really just over the rainbow for non-narrative film, as I know you are, check out the Qatsi trilogy with music by Phillip Glass. Ron Fricke, the cinematographer for Baraka and Samsara, was also the cinematographer for Koyaanisqatsi, the first of the Qatsi trilogy.

In the 1920s, Asahel Curtis was commissioned by the Washington state Department of Conservation and Development to create a series of colorized lantern slides for public presentations, designed to promote tourism and immigration to the area. The resulting hand-colored slides show interesting moments of the region's agriculture, industry and recreation. (via)
