from november 7th to 9th 2014, the inner city of berlin will be temporarily divided by a light installation featuring 8,000 glowing white balloons, commemorating the 25th anniversary since the fall of the wall. ‘LICHTGRENZE‘ (border of light), will trace an approximately 15 km long segment of the former course of the wall that once separated the city in two. developed by bauderfilm and WHITEvoid, the luminous installation evokes the candle-bearing demonstrators throughout the GDR to emphasize their peaceful intentions, and acts as a visually powerful symbol for the magnitude the wall spanned and its bearing over inhabitants. Designed by a Swedish artist named Jonas Dahlberg, the plan is more land art than architecture. On the island of Utøya, where the gunman gained access to a summer camp by dressing in a police uniform and showing a fake ID on July 22, 2011, Dahlberg proposes creating a massive gap of water and air. By slicing a huge section of the island's landmass away, he would create a steep fjord through the site where the shooting occurred—a void that he describes as "a wound or a cut within nature itself." the nytimes has a feature on louis kahn's FDR memorial which comes to roosevelt island from BEYOND THE GRAVE. it opens october 24th.

rats! this competition somehow managed to get away from new york's hottest new design trio, whet cement (it's coming...). if you're wondering what our proposal was would've been like, close your eyes and picture this:

a giant red AIDS ribbon statue with a plaque reading: "if g-d gives you AIDS, make lemon-aids."

coolest memorial project ever.

Architect Peter Zumthor designed this memorial on an island in Norway to commemorate suspected witches who were burned at the stake there in the seventeenth century.

The Steilneset Memorial in Vardø comprises two structures, one conceived entirely by Zumthor and a second housing an installation by the late Louise Bourgeois. (via)
