The fireflies start up at different times depending on soil, temperature, and other factors known only to bugkind. This year, they got going around the turn of the month. Viewing events are scheduled through June 7th, though getting in this year might require an extremely powerful wish—the spectacle has become so popular that the park only issues parking passes through a lottery. If they let everyone in who wanted to come, the fireflies would likely get trampled, park spokeswoman Dana Soehn explained to WBIR. (via)

Back in the 1940s, Idaho’s Fish and Game Department had a problem: too many beavers in all the wrong places. So they devised a plan to parachute those unwelcome beavers into new habitats. And now somebody has found footage of those parachuting beavers, and it’s wonderful. (via)

Gordon Gallup invented the test that shows whether an animal recognizes itself in the mirror: He marked primates’ faces and ears with dye and watched whether they used a mirror to investigate the spots. If they did, it revealed that the animals understood that the faces in the mirror were their own. (via)

A tourist from Australia came to my uncle and asked if she could get a ride to the glacier just north of Ilulissat, Greenland, so he asked me if I wanted to be his translator. I am from another town where glaciers are fairytales, I was as much of a tourist as the Australian tourist, so I decided to join the crew.

The beautiful scenery was amazing, but the nature doesn't care about anyone. That day almost became our last day. (via)

This time it is pretty weird. Apparently there was a UN resolution from 1992 called Agenda 21 that was written to encourage sustainable development, environmental regulation, and smart growth. Representative Glen Casada says, NOT IN MY BACKYARD!!!

  WHEREAS, this United Nations Agenda 21 plan of radical so-called “sustainable development” views the American way of life of private property ownership, single-family homes, private car ownership and individual travel choices, and privately owned farms all as destructive to the environment; and


 WHEREAS, according to the United Nations Agenda 21 policy, social justice is described as the right and opportunity of all people to benefit equally from the resources afforded us by society and the environment which would be accomplished by socialist/communist redistribution of wealth; and 


WHEREAS, according to the United Nations Agenda 21 policy, national sovereignty is deemed a social injustice; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE CONCURRING, that the General Assembly recognizes the destructive and insidious nature of United Nations Agenda 21 and hereby exposes to the public and public policymakers the dangerous intent of the plan.

In the 1920s, Asahel Curtis was commissioned by the Washington state Department of Conservation and Development to create a series of colorized lantern slides for public presentations, designed to promote tourism and immigration to the area.
