The notorious stage theory of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, whereby one progresses from denial to rage through bargaining to depression and the eventual bliss of “acceptance,” hasn’t so far had much application in my case. In one way, I suppose, I have been “in denial” for some time, knowingly burning the candle at both ends and finding that it often gives a lovely light. But for precisely that reason, I can’t see myself smiting my brow with shock or hear myself whining about how it’s all so unfair: I have been taunting the Reaper into taking a free scythe in my direction and have now succumbed to something so predictable and banal that it bores even me. i wasn't aware...
...that vanity fair (and others) writer christopher hitchens has esophageal cancer. he wrote a first-person piece for the upcoming issue detailing his diagnosis and treatment, and it's quite good. (depression alert, oc.)

meteor shower tonight
the perseid meteor shower is going down tonight. i guess it lasts for a while, and i read somewhere else that it will peak on the 12th. but i'm not going to risk missing it. gawker has a wonderful guide.
the internet says it will start after dark and the best time to watch is between midnight and 5am. like we don't have lives, meteors!
anyway, good luck.
oh and also, there's some kinda planet trifecta going on right now. this helpful diagram should explain everything.

About an hour after sunset, anyone with a clear and open view of the west-northwest horizon should be able to spot the triangle of three planets shining low in the west. (via)

books
so last night, lillywhitefish told me she was reading a book called the glass castle, and that she thought i would like it. that reminded me that i am in need of a new book.
i just finished reading the ghost map. it's about the 1854 cholera outbreak in victorian london and its influence in urban planning and social mapping and stuff. it's a strange topic, and was a little gross, but i learned a new phrase that really grosses john out, so totally worth it. i would give it 8 or 9 biscuits.
one of the books on my to-read is dead-end gene pool, written by a descendant of cornelius vanderbilt, whose family, the burdens, was rich, but messed up. it's supposed to be real funny, i guess. i also still have to read the third stieg larsson book, the girl who got stung by a bee, or whatever. unfortch, both of these are still only available in hardcover, and i have a real problem buying those.
so. while i wait for lilly to finish her book, and for the other two to come out in paperback, do you have any suggestions for me? what are you reading or have you read? just tell me everything.
maybe i should just read chelsea chelsea bang bang. it has chunk on the cover, after all.

In a sign that online streaming is coming to the forefront in Hollywood, films from Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer will appear on Netflix’s streaming service just three months after they appear on pay television.
In a deal announced Tuesday, Netflix will have the streaming rights to feature films like “Iron Man 2″ far earlier than it does now. It is a costly win for Netflix, which has been locking up the rights to films for its “Watch Instantly” service, which allows customers to stream content via the Internet rather than wait for a DVD to arrive in the mail. two things : pretty boys peeing
one more and this will become an official internet rule of three. in these two seemingly unrelated heart throb pretty boy interviews, there is an awkward interlude where the celeb and the writer use the restroom together. is this a new thing?

the agony of zac efron:
"Oh...my...God," Efron says with a gasp. "It's like the best...orgasm...ever! And I just keep coming!" Efron and I are in the Soho House bathroom after a pee, and he's lingering at the sink, letting the water pour over his diseased wrists. When he got up to head to the john, I noticed that his pants were fully unbuttoned and unzipped. "I'm just airing it out," he'd said. "It just itches too much." Discipline and doctor's orders had kept the impulse to scratch at bay.
the james franco project:
Franco is still talking about all of this as he starts to urinate, matter-of-factly, into a urinal—a process that goes on for an extremely long time. (He’s a compulsive drinker of Starbucks coffee, and Abramovic talked for well over an hour.) He’ll be filming at an actual mall in Queens next weekend, he says, still urinating, and the movie will star the performance artist John Kelly, who’s best known for appearing onstage, in drag, as Joni Mitchell. As I stand behind Franco, here in the tiny bathroom, taking notes, I feel a strange little thrill of low-grade intimacy—equal parts discomfort, amusement, affection, and an excitement whose source I can’t quite trace.

these two.
melissa was home for the weekend for a family party and supervised the re-reunion of kizzy and izzy. they mostly kept their distance, but did team up on my mom when she was drawing a bath for them. they each peed on the floor right in front of her, thusly ending up banished to the deck until they submitted (i.e. laying down).
