tomorrow, i'll finally be retiring my blackberry and entering 2010 by upgrading to an iphone. you're welcome. now. for some reason, every single iphone owner i've asked this question (liz, john, grace, etc.) has some lame excuse about why they can't answer it. maybe you can help.

can you just tell me how much data you use per month on average? i reckon i'll have to pick a plan, and i just want to be prepared.

For I.B.M., the future will happen very quickly, company executives said. On Thursday it plans to announce that it will collaborate with Columbia University and the University of Maryland to create a physician’s assistant service that will allow doctors to query a cybernetic assistant. The company also plans to work with Nuance Communications Inc. to add voice recognition to the physician’s assistant, possibly making the service available in as little as 18 months.

“I have been in medical education for 40 years and we’re still a very memory-based curriculum,” said Dr. Herbert Chase, a professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University who is working with I.B.M. on the physician’s assistant. “The power of Watson- like tools will cause us to reconsider what it is we want students to do.” (via)

In a sign that online streaming is coming to the forefront in Hollywood, films from Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer will appear on Netflix’s streaming service just three months after they appear on pay television.

In a deal announced Tuesday, Netflix will have the streaming rights to feature films like “Iron Man 2″ far earlier than it does now. It is a costly win for Netflix, which has been locking up the rights to films for its “Watch Instantly” service, which allows customers to stream content via the Internet rather than wait for a DVD to arrive in the mail. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which oversees the Internet on behalf of the U.S. government, has in the past resisted creating a .xxx generic domain name system akin to those for .com and .net.

It has in recent years repeatedly rejected a request by U.S. company ICM Registry Inc. to sign off on the .xxx domain.

But members of ICANN's board have argued that in order to maintain neutrality in dealing with domain name assignations, it should create .xxx and allow websites with sexually explicit content to start using the suffix on a voluntary basis. (via)

ESPN said 1.1 million people watched at least some of the USA's 1-0 win as it was streamed on ESPN3.com Wednesday. The match, which was also watched on ESPN by 6.2 million people, lasted from 10 a.m. to noon ET, during working hours for most of the United States.

The network says it was the biggest online audience for a sporting event, beating the Duke-Butler NCAA championship basketball game on a Monday night from earlier this year. (via)

Brazilian design graduate Jorge Lopes Dos Santos has developed a way of making physical models of foetuses using data from ultrasound, CT and MRI scans. He developed the project in collaboration with a paediatric cardiologist at Imperial College while studying on the Design Products MA course at London’s Royal College of Art. Jorge Lopes Dos Santos hopes the models, which are made using 3D printing techniques, can be used to train doctors and to help with emotional support for parents whose child may be born with deformities. SAN FRANCISCO — In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google announced late Tuesday that it is developing an operating system for PCs that is tied to its Chrome Web browser. The software, called the GoogleChrome Operating System, is initially intended for use in the tiny, low-cost portable computers known as netbooks, which have been selling quickly even as demand for other PCs has plummeted. Google said it believed the software would also be able to power full-size PCs. (nytimes)
