KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee's Derek Dooley is recovering from surgery on his fractured right hip and will coach from the press box Saturday at No. 19 Mississippi State.

The school announced Tuesday that Dooley had experienced increasing pain in his right hip over the last two months. Dooley underwent an MRI on Friday that showed he had a fracture.

After joining his team for its Tuesday morning practice session, Dooley underwent surgery later that afternoon.

The surgery was performed by Russell Betcher and Greg Mathien of the Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic at UT Medical Center.

Dooley said after Tuesday's practice that he had a "little hip issue, I'll keep you updated on it," but did reveal that he was heading to surgery.

"I wasn't in red, but I wasn't moving like I normally move," quipped Dooley, referring to the red non-contact jerseys that injured players wear in practice.

Tennessee athletic department spokesman Jimmy Stanton said Dooley won't be at practice Wednesday and that it's uncertain whether he will be at Thursday's practice.

Dooley will work from the coaches' booth at the Davis Wade Stadium press conference due to limited mobility caused by the surgery. He will consult his doctors and the Tennessee sports medicine staff to see if he can return to his normal coaching duties next week. (via)

KNOXVILLE — Derrick Brodus has completed the improbable journey from his couch to Tennessee’s starting lineup.

Brodus will take over for the slumping Michael Palardy as the 23rd-ranked Volunteers’ main kicker Saturday in their Southeastern Conference opener with No. 18 Florida. Palardy, who has missed an extra-point attempt in each of Tennessee’s first two games, will continue to handle kickoffs.

“We plan on kicking Derrick Brodus starting out as long as things stay the same during the week,” Tennessee coach Derek Dooley said. “I still believe in Mike, but he’s got some things he’s got to work through. Derrick’s certainly earned the right to be out there.” (more)

after the alabama crimson periods won the SEC national championship, we stole their linebackers coach Sal Sunseri to be our new defensive coordinator. even better news, sports illustrated named him the 2011 recruiter of the year.

  "The chance to work with Derek Dooley, who has been around championships and knows what it takes to build an elite program, combined with the rich tradition of the University of Tennessee, makes this opportunity so exciting to me," Sunseri said of the Volunteers' head coach and program, in a statement. "I am fired up to work with all of the young talent on the defensive side of the ball, and I can't wait to get up to Knoxville and coach them."

the vols had no kicker until an hour before the game this weekend!

It was an hour before kickoff Saturday night at Neyland Stadium and Tennessee coach Derek Dooley was out of kickers. Literally.

Naturally, he called Fraternity Row.

"(Michael) Palardy was hurt," Dooley said after the Vols' 24-0 victory against Middle Tennessee State. "He hurt himself Thursday in practice but we thought he'd be fine. He couldn't go. Then (Chip) Rhome goes out there in pregame and he pulls a muscle."

Good thing for Dooley and the Vols, Derrick Brodus wasn't busy.

"We didn't have a kicker," Dooley said. "And we had to make a call to the frat house. This is no lie. We called the frat house and had a policeman go get him."

Another plus for the Vols: Brodus was sober. (via)

But Dooley sounded just as pleased at the offense’s ability to drive downfield without self-destructing. All six of the Volunteers’ touchdowns in the 45-23 victory came on drives of at least 53 yards, and four of the six went at least 70. That’s the mark of a good team. “We give players of the week and on offense this week we gave it to the unit because everybody just played so well,” Dooley said. (via)
