an important message about sports and cancer brought to you by starla
Heyyyyy Y'all -
It's March Madness time!
You know you're probably going to be getting in on some pool action, so why not put your money towards funding cancer research and supportive services for blood cancer patients and their families? This season with Team in Training, I am running the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in San Diego on June 3rd. (more info here)
For 20 bucks per entry, you can enter the pool. There is a limit of 3 entries per person. The winner will get 50% of the proceeds, and the other 50% will go straight to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. How can you pay to sign up? Easy.
1. For the lucky people who see me on the regular, you can give me cash.
2. Otherwise, email 2pznappod@gmail.com and arrangements will be made for payment
To make your picks, click the following link to get to my bracket - http://cbtnt.mayhem.cbssports.com/brackets
If you don't have one already, you'll need to create a username and password for CBS Sports. All brackets are private, so if you want to participate I'll invite you to join ASAP. You can start making your picks today and brackets will close on March 15th. Sign up and play, and give some $ to LLS at the same time - everyone's a winner!
Thanks!!

the vols beat uconn today thanks to the next greatest basketball player ever, mr. jarnell stokes. he is the 11th ranked player nationally in the 2012 recruiting class. he graduated from southwind high school in december (but played his bball at memphis central) and played his first game for the basketvols last week. he had his first start today, and he is good. way to get him, cuonzo.

the saddest happiest video ever.
look how happy the vols are to have beaten vanderbilt. i want to be excited with them, but i can't get past the vanderbilt part. they almost had me at "the one thing tennessee always does is kick the shit out of vanderbilt." god, that locker room is spectacular.
anyway, great win, vols. here are some highlights:

good decision, B of A.
1) i won't lie. i really like bank of america for my personal checking and savings and credit card needs. i've always received excellent customer service, and despite all the evidence that they might be among the most evil of corporations, i would call myself a loyal customer. so, i was pretty disappointed to hear about the institution of debit card fees. in recent days, several of B of A's competitors have announced that they will not follow suit. that, in combination with customer outrage, seems to have made an impression on the decision-makers, because, look!
Bank of America Corp. is dropping its plan to charge customers $5 a month for making purchases with their debit cards, a person familiar with the situation said.
The move is a dramatic retreat following decisions by several rivals in recent days to drop customer tests of the new fees. SunTrust Banks Inc. and Regions Financial Corp. also said Monday that they will stop charging customers for debit-card transactions.
Bank of America decided against the fees due to negative customer feedback on the plan and the moves by rivals, which left the Charlotte, N.C., lender as the only big bank planning to levy the fee on some customers next year.
Bank of America will formally announce the decision today, this person said. (via)2) which leads me to my next point : the power of the internet. before this decision was "walked back", i had been wondering what B of A was thinking. in the past year, we have seen internet complaining undo the gap re-branding, the tropicana re-branding, and netflix's terrible re-structuring idea. i thought it was awful bold of B of A to hold firm in the face of widespread backlash. but, it looks like the power of the internet has won out again. so keep on bitching, everyone!

do you think everyone hates this girl?
"On Friday, with Pinckney leading powerful Michigan rival Grand Blanc, 6-0, at the half, Amat, the first girl to play football for the school’s varsity, was asked to return to the field. When she arrived, she was told that her fellow students had voted her queen. When the tiara was placed on her head, she was wearing not a dress, like the other girls in the homecoming court, but her No. 12 uniform, pads and all.
A short while later, with five minutes to play in the third quarter, Amat was called to the same field to attempt a 31-yard field goal. She split the uprights.
The kick proved decisive as Pinckney held on for a 9-7 victory against a Grand Blanc team that had come into the game ranked seventh in the state in its division. It also earned Amat the nickname the Kicking Queen." article

the terrorists win.
from fresh air, an interesting analysis of the change (or lackthereof) in the american lexicon following september 11th:
They were instant cliches, but they needed saying anyway. September 11th was our Pearl Harbor. It would change the way we think and create a new normal. It defined a generation. And from the beginning, people looked to the language to bear witness to how utterly differently we were seeing the world. Ten years later, it's not so clear.
I've been making a list of all the words I've been tracking since 2001 that were connected to 9/11 and its repercussions. Its a jumble: axis of evil and the army you have, cakewalk, coalition of the willing and connect the dots, dead or alive and don't touch my junk, evildoers and enhanced interrogation. But the one thing that jumps out at me is how ephemeral they are. Most have already disappeared, and apart from 9/11 itself, few of the rest will be around a decade from now. (via)
