would you like a long-ish read?
emilube sent me this interview with drake's vocal coach, who is credited with forming his unique style as a singer / rapper. it provides some really interesting insight into the artistic processes of both, and drake's evolution as an artist.
now i'm going to have a drake day on spotify.

trend alert?
with the 9th annual international cornhole cup rapidly approaching (june 14, jicyww), i've been brushing up on what the kids are listening to, and i noticed a thing.
this is a new song by jeremih featuring YG, which i shared with you as a potential song of the summer. it features a (pretty loose) sample from 90's clurb anthem "rhythm is a dancer".
this is a new song by kid ink featuring chris brown, and i noticed it sounded pretty much exactly the same. the sample in this one is from the 90's clurb anthem "show me love" by robin s.
the answer to this riddle is that both tracks were produced by some guy named dj mustard, who is clearly phoning it in. you can recognize him by his "mustard on tha beat" calling card. i guess it's not really a trend if it's just one guy repeating the same formula. i hope it catches on though because i'm enjoying the aesthetic.
on a side note: what are the odds that two songs called "show me love" would be released in the same year by people named robin / robyn?
UPDATE: ugh here's another song that sounds exactly the same.
come on, dj mustard.

tReNd aLeRt!
i just wanted to make you aware of a hot new trend in hip hop: ma$e references. allow me to demonstrate.
here is a song on drake's new album, called "worst behavior". skip ahead to about 2:30, and you'll hear his adaptation of a ma$e verse.
here it is, the first verse of notorious b.i.g.'s "mo money mo problems.
this morning, i was perusing the new pusha t album (thx djv), and i was all "ooh a song with kelly rowland....play!" i was real surprised to find that ma$e was also on the song, but it turns out its just pusha t doing a ma$e impression. skip to 1:25 to hear his take on...
...ma$e's classic "what you want" (skip to 1:35).
and just for good measure, you might remember kanye's ma$e reference on "cold" a couple years back, borrowing the opening line from...
... "lookin' at me".
there you have it. ma$e = still hot in 2013! celebrate your friday with harlem world!

the best endorsement of all
new york city's favorite rap station, hot97, has endorsed bill de blasio for mayor! and with good reason:
After the de Blasio interview, Rosenberg told the audience he was siding with de Blasio, and rattled off a number of reasons. The first reason Rosenberg stated was de Blasio's focus on the wealth gap in the city. Then he said, "I personally don't like the Christine Quinn-estabishment vibe. I don't like how much she's embraced by Mayor Bloomberg" and, "I want a change from Mayor Bloomberg."
After that, Rosenberg said this: "On top of that, and maybe most importantly, you can't tell me you don't want to have [a mayor] who happens to be white but his wife is black and his kid has the most epic, non-Jewish Jew-fro of all time."
Rosenberg said "all of those reasons are why I'm going to vote for Bill de Blasio." (via)

more Grizzlies news: Peyton Manning wants in
Last time we talked about new minority owners of the Memphis Grizzlies, we had just heard about Justin Timberlake buying a piece of the best NBA team in the world. This time word on the internet is that former Tennessee Volunteer Peyton Manning is getting in on the action. Peyton's wife Ashley Manning (nee Thompson) is from Memphis so it isn't totally out of the blue. In order to really compete with the Nets' Jay Z buzz, I think the next announcement needs to be that Juicy J or Gangsta Boo are buying some Grizzlies. Rapper owners.

dmx speaks!
on drake's aaliyah project:
To MTV: "I’m kinda feelin’ some kinda a way about the fact that ... you’ve been given the opportunity to do the Aaliyah album yet you don’t include anybody that she worked with personally ... How do you disregard what this woman did? What this beautiful angel did and say, ‘Oh OK, I’m gonna take it for myself because I’m hot right now and I’m feelin’ myself’. How do you just go there with it? Your balls ain’t that big, son.” Also, he said Take Care sounds like a washing machine. (via)who wants to watch romeo must die?
