By taking advantage of a powerful rip current in French Polynesia's famed Tiputa Pass, world-class freediver Guillaume Néry gets pushed around the barren, rocky landscape as if he were a satellite orbiting an alien planet. Néry -- who is not using any breathing equipment -- is surrounded only by a dark, lonely abyss. (via)

sea organ!

With the variable force of the waves, the water penetrates the lower end of the tubes and is carried into the subterranean gallery, which collects it and returns it to the sea. In this process the air of the interior of the conduits is pushed to orifices that connect the gallery with the surface of the parade, generating sound vibrations which, given the variations in the diameter and length of the tubes, cover a broad range of musical tones. long read(s)

y'all should check out this NYT series that is underway, called the outlaw ocean. so far there are 4 pieces, all presented in their interactive format. so far, my favorite is the latest one, in which the sea shepherd vessel, the bob barker, of whale wars fame, chases one of the world's most wanted illegal trawlers called tHe ThUnDeR!!!111

READ IT.

your fortnightly boat

or at least, boat-related...
The recent installation of 216 state-of-the-art electronically-controlled wave boards has made this the most sophisticated scientific wave-testing basin of its size in the world. Scaled-down fiberglass models, cruisers the size of canoes, ride waves that max out at a few feet high. But it’s the motion of the ocean that matters. The hinged wave boards, each with its own motor synced up to software, can precisely recreate eight ocean conditions (from flat calm to typhoonlike) across all seven seas, pushing the water and moving up and down like giant piano keys whose scales and chords are waves.
The Navy tests models in the basin to be sure that billion-dollar ships will float before it builds them, but also to assess whether sailors can launch missiles and land helicopters in particular circumstances, and how vessels handle with a full tank versus running on fumes. Pitch, roll, sway, heave, acceleration, displacement—the calculations alone are enough to make you queasy. (via)

what did i watch on netflix this weekend?

i watched the new netflix documentary from the director of the cove, called mission blue. it tells the life story of marine biologist and ocean-rights activist, dr. sylvia earle, aka my new fave #HBIC. and it's not just a history, she's also got a plan for saving us all. one (not real) word: hopespots.

i give it 11 biscuits!

the next doc i'm planning to watch is a paleontology thriller called dinosaur 13. it's in theaters right now, but it's also available on amazon prime and ondemand. let me know if you want to come over and watch with me.
