what did i watch on netflix this weekend?

i watched the new netflix documentary from the director of the cove, called mission blue. it tells the life story of marine biologist and ocean-rights activist, dr. sylvia earle, aka my new fave #HBIC. and it's not just a history, she's also got a plan for saving us all. one (not real) word: hopespots.

i give it 11 biscuits!


the next doc i'm planning to watch is a paleontology thriller called dinosaur 13. it's in theaters right now, but it's also available on amazon prime and ondemand. let me know if you want to come over and watch with me.

japan has to stop murdering whales.

TOKYO — The decision to ban Japan’s annual whaling drive off Antarctica, handed down by the United Nations’ highest court on Monday, was a hard-won victory for conservationists who long argued that Tokyo’s whaling research was a cover for commercial whaling.

The ruling by the International Court of Justice in The Hague halts a Japanese program that has captured more than 10,000 minke and other whales in the Southern Ocean each year since 1988 in the name of biological research. (via)

But late last week, signs started popping up around the lake notifying anglers of the arrival of an intruder. The dreaded northern snakehead, a fierce predator common in the rivers and lakes of Asia but considered an invasive species in American waters, had been spotted.

The warning to anglers was clear: If you catch this fish, do not release it. Contact the authorities immediately. It does not belong and could radically alter the local fish population.

The snakehead is a relentless and efficient predator that devours just about everything in its path — fish, frogs, crayfish, beetles and aquatic insects. Aquarium staff were baffled when the 8.8lb giant gourami called Gary rejected normal food after being donated to them.

Then the previous owners of the exotic Asian freshwater fish admitted feeding it only with the chocolate-covered wafers.

Experts at the Sea Life London Aquarium had to put crushed Kit Kat pieces inside grapes and banana slices to tempt the 15.7in-long fish on to a normal diet.

Gary's handler Rebecca Carter said: "I've never heard of a fish being fed chocolate, let alone brought up entirely on the stuff."

Gouramis are a delicacy in Indonesia. Rebecca added: "Gary doesn't appear to have suffered ill effects. Most fish wouldn't be able to survive on Kit Kats but gouramis are very hardy."

Gary, thought to be seven to ten years old, is not the only Aquarium fish to have picked up odd habits from previous owners. Catfish Ed likes to be stroked on the head as staff feed it by hand. (via)

shark week, day 3 - twosie tuesday

i am in tennessee this week. i had a great time on the boat with some architecture classmates this weekend. we all made it through the weekend with limbs intact. we only saw like 80 sharks. this morning i walked down to the cove and saw a whole pack of sharks, so i called my dad to come down. he grabbed his fishing pole, and on his first cast he caught two! that was a first for us. those fish are like 2pznappod!

ready to learn again?

i listened to this episode of 'fresh air' on my way to work this morning. given joel's recent devotion to what some consider to be our planet's last wild food source, i thought i'd share this "dive" into the transformation of the seafood industry over recent decades, and how its environmental impact has evolved.

i'll be honest, i did not know bluefin tuna could get this big. enjoy!
