puppy play time

Every evening a river otter comes to play with our daughter's dog Rio. What was once an acquaintance on the other side of the fence has now become a friend who comes to play through the fence.It has been interesting to watch as their trust of each other has developed over the past several months. via

an old timey tennessee freed slave's letter to his old master, who wrote begging for him to come back, if you can believe that.

Dayton, Ohio,

August 7, 1865

To My Old Master, Colonel P.H. Anderson, Big Spring, Tennessee

Sir: I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten Jourdon, and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again, promising to do better for me than anybody else can. I have often felt uneasy about you. I thought the Yankees would have hung you long before this, for harboring Rebs they found at your house. I suppose they never heard about your going to Colonel Martin's to kill the Union soldier that was left by his company in their stable. Although you shot at me twice before I left you, I did not want to hear of your being hurt, and am glad you are still living. It would do me good to go back to the dear old home again, and see Miss Mary and Miss Martha and Allen, Esther, Green, and Lee. Give my love to them all, and tell them I hope we will meet in the better world, if not in this. I would have gone back to see you all when I was working in the Nashville Hospital, but one of the neighbors told me that Henry intended to shoot me if he ever got a chance.

never forget : the olympics are coming.

FIVE-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe has bombed out of the 200m freestyle, finishing 12th at the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide.

Thorpe, who only announced he was making a comeback 14 months ago, now needs to finish in the top six of the 100m freestyle if his Olympic dream is to be realised.

After a strong start, Thorpe faded in the last 100m, stopping the clock in 1:49.91s, slower than the 1:49.18 he swam this morning in the heat.

"I'm terribly disappointed with that, I had a really good heat swim and I thought I could swim a lot quicker," Thorpe said.

"The last 100 was a struggle, I'm not sure why.

"This was slower than what I swam this morning, probably the inexperience of racing in the last 18 months held me up.

"The fairytale has turned into a nightmare." (via)

On May 22, dance-punk trio Gossip will return with a new full-length for Columbia, titled A Joyful Noise. The record was produced by Brian Higgins of Xenomania (Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys, Girls Aloud, Sugababes), and frontwoman Beth Ditto said she "spent the whole year listening to ABBA" while recording.
