shout out murfree(r?)sboro

John Mulaney is going to be one of the biggest names in comedy for years to come. If you don't know him from his stand-up or his work as a writer on SNL (he created Stefon with Bill Hader), you'll know him soon enough. On Sunday, his new neo-Seinfeld-ian sitcom Mulaney will premiere on Fox, and last night he stopped by The Tonight Show to promote it. In addition to telling the story of how he got Ice-T to read his new show's intros, he shared what has to be one of the greatest stand-up comedian heckle stories of all time. It involves an unpronounceable Tennessee town, a beer truck, and some unexpected Southern eloquence. Check it out above. We can only hope Mulaney will be as funny as its star. (via)

nashville's choo choo plan

Lawmakers looking to relieve traffic congestion in Nashville have hit upon an improbable solution: a monorail.
The stretch of I-24 between Nashville and Murfreesboro is one of the most congested in the state, and it’s projected to get even worse as the population grows.
So State Senator Bill Ketron, a Murfreesboro Republican, proposed building a monorail along the highway median. While it may sound ridiculous at first, the idea is getting some traction. (via)

so proud (not) to see the boro has attracted the attention of the atlantic wire:
A years-long legal battle over the very existence of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro in Tennessee has cost Rutherford County $343,276 in legal fees, as a group of plaintiffs opposed to the center's existence continue to pursue their lawsuit against the county planning commissioners who approved it. And that number will likely go up as the county's legal team prepares to respond to an appeal request to the U.S. Supreme Court, as the Tennessean reported on Wednesday. (via)

ever wonder where erin macbreath went to elementary school?

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) - A school staff member found the remnants of a meth lab on a playground at a Murfreesboro elementary school, then took parts of it inside the building.
A hazardous waste team has been dispatched to Mitchell Nielson Primary School after chemicals, a bottle and tubing used in making meth was found.
The staff member, not knowing what the items were used for, took it inside the school, then brought it back outside for law enforcement to move to a safe location.
The person who created the meth lab took part of it with them to finish the meth-making process. No meth crystals were found at the school. (via)

the 10 days of my birthday zooventure

(NEW BLOG FEATCH!!)

next weekend, in celebration of my bearthdie, we're going to the bRoNx ZoO!! for the next 10 days, i will introduce you to some of the residents that i look most forward to meeting!

today's entry : please welcome..... an oKaPi!!!

the zoo welcomed into the world a new baby okapi earlier this year, and she just made her public debut a couple of weeks ago! her name is m'bura (strikingly similar to the abbreviation for murfreesboro, which is m'boro...).
M’bura, an okapi calf revealed to the public at the Bronx Zoo last week after more than 18 months of delicate husbandry work, was stretching out her stubby zebra-striped legs before a crowd of young admirers on Thursday.
“It’s a zebra horse!” said Dagney Donaldson, 7, of Summit, N.J.
Not exactly. Okapis are the only known relative of the giraffe, but with the silhouette of an antelope. They are notoriously skittish, so adept at avoiding other animals in the wild — including other okapis — that Western researchers didn’t even document their existence until 1901.
To breed such an antisocial animal in captivity requires a mix of patience, genetic know-how and romantic savoir-faire. Potential mates are slowly and strategically introduced over weeks, and newborn calves — which do not defecate for the first month of their lives to avoid detection in the wild — are left untouched by humans to preserve the fragile mother-child bond.
So as M’bura, now a healthy 5-month-old, gallops around her shady habitat in the Bronx, zoo officials are taking a victory lap of their own. (via)
ceeeeYUTE!! can't wait to meet you, murfreesboro!!

lookin' good, boro.

murfreesboro's state representative, rick womick, spent his veterans' day sharing his enlightened views of muslims in the military.
"Who are we at war with?" Womick said. "We are at war with al-Qaeda and the Taliban, who are Muslims. It's a Catch-22. They are not allowed to kill their fellow Muslims, we're at war with Muslims. The only solution I see is that they not be allowed in the military." (via)
totes makes sense. thx emilube!

Toot's, the home of good food and fun, is closed due to severe storm damages.
The Broad Street location lost half its roof, causing floor and structural damage after it rained into the building throughout the early morning.
There is no estimate on when the restaurant will be up and running again, but cleaning and repairs are underway.
The Toot's staff did say the business will still cater the Boys & Girls Club Steak & Burger dinner Thursday evening, and the Toot's South location on South Church Street remains open and unaffected. (via)

first, there was a campus shooting. and now this:

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Middle Tennessee basketball player Tina Stewart was stabbed to death at her apartment close to campus and police have two people in custody and were searching a third, authorities said Wednesday night.
The 21-year-old Stewart had multiple wounds when authorities found her, Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans said. Police had been called because of a disturbance, and Evans said officers took a man and a woman into custody outside the apartment before finding Stewart inside.

The junior guard from Memphis was taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center and was later pronounced dead. (via)
