nErD aLeRt!

hey y'all, have you heard about the work MASS design group has been doing in rwanda? go ahead and familiarize yourself with this video, and see if you can spot 2Pz friend tanya paz!
There is a critical balance that comes from first taking the time to understand a community as we did by living there and working side-by-side with local people. Harnessing this new understanding, we were then able to propose powerful new design solutions. Ghanaian architect Joe Ossae-Addo talks about “Inno-native” architecture—a combination of innovation and local tradition. At IDEO.org, where I served in the inaugural class of fellows last year, we used the term “human-centered design” for this methodology. (via)

you may have noticed the sudden and overwhelming internet presence of something called KONY 2012. this is it, jicyww.
Kony 2012 is an unlikely internet phenomenon. The 30-minute documentary about a despot Ugandan warlord has been watched more than 30m times online in less than 48 hours.
The hard-hitting film, uploaded by a group seeking to expose the guerilla leader Joseph Rao Kony, was relatively undiscovered until two days ago despite being first watched on the website Vimeo last Friday.
In the past 48 hours, Kony 2012 has been viewed more than 21m times on YouTube and 11m times on Vimeo.
According to YouTube statistics, the Kony video is most popular with young women aged 13 to 17 and men aged 18 to 24. (via)
responses to the video have not been without criticism, however.
It would be great to get rid of Kony. He and his forces have left a path of abductions and mass murder in their wake for over 20 years. But let's get two things straight: 1) Joseph Kony is not in Uganda and hasn't been for 6 years; 2) the LRA now numbers at most in the hundreds, and while it is still causing immense suffering, it is unclear how millions of well-meaning but misinformed people are going to help deal with the more complicated reality. (via)

there's even a hilarious drinking game

and now you're caught up. pick a side and argue the shit out of it next time you're drunk.

good luck South Sudan. Doesn't look like its on google maps yet, but maybe one day...

The new country is rich in oil, but one of the least developed countries in the world, where one in seven children dies before the age of five.

have y'all been following tunisia?

(it's right there across the street from italy)

this morning i saw a headline about protests against an authoritarian ruler in tunisia. last night he said he's stop using live ammo on protesters, which just made folks get on twitter and facebook to organize bigger protests. well, it seems they were successful. the corrupt leader was overthrown and fled the country, and get this -

this also marks the first time an arab leader has been overthrown through protests.

i had a feeling this wikileaks thing would turn out for the best somehow. way to go wikileaks. and america, we shouldn't be so shy when gossiping about other countries.

nytimes has all the coverage you need.

someone made a bad decision

a passenger snuck a crocodile onto a regional turbojet in the congo and didnt live to regret his decision. the croc bit his way out of the sportsbag he was stuffed into, then ran amok in the cabin of the plane freaking out everyone. the panic on the small plane shifted the weight balance causing the jet to spin and crash into an abandoned house. there was one survivor. the crocodile survived too, but was killed with a machete during the rescue attempt. bad choices. via.

best friends

The baby elephant, orphaned at six months old when his mother fell down a cliff, chased his new friend Albert until the sheep took refuge in a shelter -- for 12 hours.
But since then, the animals have been "inseparable," say observers, napping together, walking together, and even picking up habits: Albert (sheep) figured out how to eat thorny bushes by following Themba's (elephant) lead to avoid the spikes.
