Part of a new old-looking development called University Crossing. You might remember the actual-old industrial plant called Fulton Bellows that operated on that site until 2005. At least all those students aren't going to have to drive to Turkey Creek anymore.

The Princeton University Art Museum has just opened an exhibition that treats its campus as an art object.

“Princeton and the Gothic Revival: 1870-1930” examines the intent of the university’s medieval-stylized dormitories, classrooms, libraries and chapels, both when they were first built during the British Empire’s Victorian heyday and today. The galleries are just an appetizer, though, because the campus is literally a museum of what used to be called “collegiate gothic” architecture and you’re encouraged to use a smart phone app to follow its development on a tour.

It’s a more interesting subject than any mere historical study because of the recent completion of Whitman College, the sprawling dorm designed by Demetri Porphyrios, with $30 million provided by Meg Whitman, a Princeton graduate and former eBay chief, who now heads Hewlitt-Packard. Whitman College is, as so many Porphyrios buildings are, a historical revival, too, a gothic fortress on the outside and a software-friendly, James-Bond supervillain lair on the inside (at least, when compared with traditional college housing). Why contemporary students would want to live in a Hogwort’s dream such as the Whitman is really what this show is about. (via)

The unemployment rate for recent graduates was highest in architecture, at 13.9 percent, probably at least partly because of the housing market collapse. Even architecture majors who went on to receive graduate degrees, which usually safeguard workers from unemployment, are doing poorly in the job market. With a jobless rate of 7.7 percent, architecture majors who hold graduate degrees are still more likely to be unemployed than newly minted college grads who studied journalism (!). (via)

The Brit beauty might not have magic powers, but a source close to Brown University (where Watson was enrolled from fall 2009 until this past winter) tells us the star's brainy ways may have led to her classmates' heckling – and perhaps a reason why she left the Providence, R.I., institution.

The insider says Watson didn't shy away from class participation and often would "answer something in class and get it right," calling the 21-year-old actress "really smart." Unfortunately, this brought out the sophisticated wit and cinematic expertise of her Ivy League peers.

According to the source, her classmates "would respond [to her answer] with a quote from 'Harry Potter.'" The most popular choice was "Three points for Gryffindor!" – a reference to the movie's dormitory system, and a congratulatory phrase in the films when a student got a correct answer. (via)
