LOS ANGELES -- Renaldo Woolridge, a son of former NBA player Orlando Woolridge, will play for Southern California next season.
The forward is set to graduate from Tennessee this summer with a degree in sociology, but was granted one more season of eligibility after being limited to eight games because of an ankle injury during his junior year.
Woolridge averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 rebounds playing in 25 games last season for the Volunteers. In three years at Tennessee, he started 20 of 93 games. The 6-foot-9, 215-pounder is from Sherman Oaks, Calif. His father played 13 years in the NBA, including with the Los Angeles Lakers.
USC coach Kevin O'Neill says Woolridge can play multiple positions and will make an impact in the one year that he's eligible. (via)

this doesn't make one lick of sense.

Almost 400 volunteers are searching the dense West Tennessee woodlands looking for a 20-year-old nursing student last seen being dragged by a man dressed in camouflage into the woods near her home, investigators said.
Holly Bobo was dragged "across the carport of her home… toward a wooded area" in the town of Parsons on Wednesday, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Both Bobo's mother and 25-year-old brother watched the woman being abducted and called 911.
John Mayer, spokesman for the TBI, would not say if family members tried to intervene or if they were suspected in the abduction.
...
Investigators initially believe the young woman may have been abducted from her house in a home invasion, but Mayer told ABCNews.com that "the suspect was never inside."
Police won't comment on what else family members told them or what evidence may have been left behind.
"The investigation is ongoing," said Mayer. (via)
amiright?

and i'm not sure john mayer's the right man for the job.

15 September 2010

finally, an explanation.

on saturday, aka september 11th....gulp. we were up on my roof checkin' out the ol' towers of light, when we noticed that something was happening in the beams. they appeared to have been glitter bombed. both light shafts from the ground up to where they terminated into the low clouds were full of little specks moving in the light. from our vantage point in brooklyn, it was hard to gauge the scale of the objects, and they did look sparkly, so we just assumed they had shot some confetti off or something, during the 9/11 party tribute down at ground zero.

anyway, i've been scouring the internet ever since looking for an explanation, and gawker just gave it to me:

They were thousands of birds, trapped into the beams, confused by the intense light while trying to go over New York City, en route to warmer climates. The birds saw the intense light from the distance and, lacking any other navigational reference in the sky, they went into it.
According to John Rowden, citizen science director at the Audubon Society's New York chapter, "it has only happened once before. It's a confluence of circumstances that come together to cause this. Some of it has to do with meteorological conditions, and some with the phase of the moon."
About 10,000 birds were estimated to enter the beams, wasting time and energy that now can't be used in their migratory trip. From the ground, people were surprised and confused by the display. Nobody could tell what the swarm of glowing points were. Ornithology experts recorded the bird voices, as they called in the middle of the night.
To liberate the birds, the NYC authorities had to turn off the beams five times over the night. By dawn, on September 12, all the birds were gone, on their way to their winter promised land. (via)

it was BIRDS!! ten THOUSand of them!

so many layers.

The patient was only slightly injured when he limped into a hospital in the northwest New Mexico city of Farmington. The only problem was, he was a dog.

When the automatic doors at San Juan Regional Medical Centre's emergency room slid open Saturday night, the pooch walked in, blood on his nose and paw, and a puncture hole in one leg, according to The Daily Times newspaper.

Animal control officer Robin Loev responded to a call from the hospital and suspects the puncture wound was from the bite of another dog.

Loev says the German shepherd mix appeared to be intelligent and calm - and knew enough to go to the right place.

The animal was taken to the Farmington Animal Shelter and claimed by its owner. (via)

MTA jerks

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is looking to lay off hundreds of New York City subway station agents, revising an earlier plan under which they would have been allowed to retire, according to two people with knowledge of the plans.

The layoffs are to be announced on Tuesday, along with cuts to the authority’s administrative and managerial staff, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the revised plan had not been formally unveiled. (via)

i just want to know, if they lay off all the station agents, to whom am i to turn when i swipe my metrocard, slam my pelvis into a locked turnstyle, am asked by the computer to swipe my card again, and then told i "just used" my swipe, like what happened to me yesterday.

if it wasn't for the station agent who opened the gate and let me in, i would've been waiting there for 19 minutes. this is not the answer, MTA.
