click here to see a slideshow of all the new facilities, and click here to see drawings that mock them all. (i actually think the aquatic center and the velodrome are quite stunning.)
between this and the recently released details about the opening ceremony plans, this is shaping up to be the shittiest olympics since atlanta. speaking of....

how strange.
According to The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will announce today that Cornell University has won the city's competition to open a new technology-based campus on Roosevelt Island. The facility will be a 2,000-student satellite campus of Cornell, based out of Ithaca in upstate New York, focusing on high-tech studies in order to turn city into an East Coast startup hub akin to Stanford-Silicon Valley pairing out west. The move to the Big Apple isn't unprecedented for Cornell, which already has its medical school in the city. (via)

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran objects to the logo for the 2012 London Olympics, contending it is racist because it resembles the word "Zion" and warning of a possible boycott of the Games.
They are urging other Muslim states to oppose the "racist logo."
I don't like the logo because it's ugly, but since you all know how much I like to incite hatred (being a conservative and all), I think I'll start liking it.

ugly pony taken in by self-righteous little girl.
this little girl fell in love with this ugly pony, and saved his life.
"Diego is my best friend and I don't care what he looks like, to me his face makes him special. He's so lovely. We have a lot of fun playing games and he likes to chase me around the field. I love him lots and he gives me kisses and cuddles. People shouldn't say he should be put down because of what he looks like, it doesn't matter to me." (via)
and she's also doing some fundraising to save his face.
thx g!

Well that didn't work...

Arakawa, a Japanese-born conceptual artist and designer, who with his wife, Madeline Gins, explored ideas about mortality by creating buildings meant to stop aging and preclude death, died Tuesday in Manhattan. He was 73.

check out the new lampposts just unveiled at fulton street mall.
The new poles are cylindrical and quite high, with an unusual curving shaft. All have a pair of high intensity sodium vapor lamps, which burn bright yellow. Unlike other luminaires these are actually a part of the post, so there shouldn't be any mixing and matching of different luminaires as in past lamppost deigns. Note the photocell at the top of the shaft. (via)
i think they're pretty ugly. what do you think?

mcmansions by r.a.m. stern. sweet! The houses, an 11,135-square-foot French Norman with a list price of $11.95 million, and an 11,870-square-foot Colonial Revival for $11.2 million, are unabashedly large. Whether this is an admirable aspect of what Mr. Stern called the New Urbanism, or out of place just north of the established — and exclusive — Fieldston neighborhood, depends on your point of view.
