too many dead nutria!

after katrina, everyone knows the potential risk to human life that each new hurricane threat can bring. but did you ever think about nutrias? no. you didn't. not until they start washing up on your shores by the thousands. 

Department of Environmental Quality officials say so far they've counted more than 5,000 dead nutrias on Hancock County beaches, but they say that number could top 10,000 before they all finish washing ashore. 
Hancock County faced a similar nutria problem after Hurricane Gustav. 
"If you're out here, it's a terrible smell," Garcia said. "As this heat continues, they're just going to blow up and pop, making it even more of a health hazard."

Life on the prized white sands of Dauphin Island, a barrier island guarding the mouth of Mobile Bay, is proceeding on two tracks right now. While National Guard troops and scores of laborers in hazmat gear and gloves fortify the island for the coming war on oil (the hay, it turns out, is meant to absorb encroaching sheen), vacationers kite-surf and loll about barefoot, peering at the heavy helicopter traffic through their bird-watching binoculars.

“Tarballs DO NOT pose a health risk to the average person,” the bureau said in an informative Web advisory. “However, beachgoers are advised not to pick them up if they encounter any on the beach.” (via)
