i hope you're all following gawker's "new york's best restaurant is:" series.

the two best gawker writers, caity weaver and rich juzwiak have been doing this series where they go to touristy restaurants in the city and tell us what they're like. the latest one was an all-drinking feature at the restaurant in the 5th avenue tommy bahama's store. here's an excerpt:
Rich: This idea of yours made me wonder if you've been regarding me with jealousy during our "Best Restaurant in New York" excursions, since I generally get a drink (fine, two drinks) and you never do. Are you envious of my champagne-sipping lifestyle?
Caity: Absolutely not. I love Diet Coke. Diet Coke is my favorite thing to drink. My second favorite thing to drink, I have recently learned, is "Coconut Cloud Martini" from the Tommy Bahama store on 5th Avenue. That was the first cocktail I ordered this afternoon, and I remember it like it was yesterday.
joel and thomas wilhelm and i are going to go if anyone feels like joining?

where are you spending the first day of summer?

spotted. from the fairway parking lot in red hook, the beginnings of the brooklyn crab shack! i was pleased to learn that the restaurant is being opened by the owners of alma, another red hook spot that is fucking delicious.
The space will encompass two decks overlooking the New York Harbor, so like Alma, it should boast unrivaled views. They'll serve seafood from up and down the Atlantic coast and will offer salads, soups, sandwiches, and a raw bar. There are also rumors of miniature golf. It's unclear how long construction should take—it's a major undertaking and all of the owners all have small children—but they hope to open by this summer. (via)

the happiest place on earth : governor's island

the nytimes has a heart-lifting article and slideshow depicting the wonders of governor's island. if you haven't gone, you should. and soon.
Its 172 acres include empty Victorian houses, imposing forts, a parade ground and ball fields, an artificial beach and an encircling promenade with arresting panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan, Brooklyn and New Jersey. And increasingly over the last four years, from May to October — with visitors now riding hourly on weekend ferries from Brooklyn and Manhattan — the island has been shaping a new culture of its own. Its participants include trapeze artists, bicyclists, conceptual artists, D.J.’s, musicians, dancers and dramatists, and its attractions range from views of the New York Harbor to a free miniature-golf course designed by an arts group, where fanciful stations allow players to take metaphorical potshots at a national missile defense shield or putt a ball in support of carbon-neutral footprints.
