an international North Korean gay sex scandal!

Actually, it looks more like a gay kiss and some heavy gay petting. Faith told me about these photos taken by South Koreans across the border of two North Korean troops engaged in a special hug.

Gay Star News reports that the Korean Friendship Association, which is sponsored by the government of North Korea, (DPRK) commented:
"While 'it is not customary for individuals of any sexual orientation to engage in public displays of affection... Homosexuals in the DPRK have never been subject to repression, as in many capitalist regimes around the world."

we were there - cellphone throwing scandal

Have you read about the theater critic who tossed a lady's cellphone across the room when she refused to stop texting during the show? You can read about it here or here or here or here or about a million other places on the internet.

If you have any other questions, you can ask me or Ms. Dangles because we were at that show! Mike's friend Dave wrote all the music and is a main performer. It is in a really cool pop-up cabaret style theater tucked under the Highline, across the street from the Standard. Anyway, we were seated about 10 feet away from those involved and I distinctly remember looking over my shoulder several times throughout the show because some drunk ladies were causing a commotion. We took to calling them the Real Housewives of NYC because it seemed like they were out for attention... the wrong kind of attention. I didn't see the slap, but I did see the woman charge down the stairs after her phone and immediately storm out through the performance space into the bar/ lobby. It is actually a great testament to the fortitude of the performers that they were able to continue seamlessly in the face of such a disruption. Go see it if you're ever in the mood for a Russian rock opera musical based on War and Peace and you want to eat dinner at a table with strangers and possible witness a battle in the ongoing cell phone culture war.

my local congressman makes national news for having a secret daughter

He got caught tweeting a beautiful young woman after the SOTU and people thought he was having some sort of romantic relationship with her. Steve Cohen is not married, so there isn't really anything wrong with that, but whatever. It turns out that the lady in questions wasn't a girlfriend, it was a daughter that had been kept secret from him until three years ago! whoa. To make it even weirder, the girl's mother was previously married to Frank Sinatra Jr. and is a defense lawyer in Texas for international war criminals. huh? I vote for this man.

olympic women's badminton scandal alert!

Today, eight players on four women's badminton doubles teams were expelled from the Games for "match fixing." Basically, badminton players suffer from the same extensive depth of field that spelled doom for Jordyn Wieber: The best teams generally come from Central and Southeast Asia, so their biggest competition is usually their fellow countrymen. In the tournament's round-robin knockout format, teams from China, South Korea, and Indonesia were facing the distinct possibility of having to go up against, and knock out, teams from their own countries before the finals. They obviously didn't want this to happen.
The first round of group play was non-elimination, just to determine the draw for the knockout quarterfinals. So in last night's final Round of sixteen matches, Chinese World Champions Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang deliberately started hitting shots wide or serving into the net against South Koreans Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na. Both pairs had already qualified to move on to the next round; the throwing of the game seemed to be in order to ensure China's No. 1 team wouldn't meet China's No. 2 team of Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei until the gold medal round. The South Koreans said they only started throwing the game because the Chinese started it. The Chinese said they'd just been trying to conserve their energy since they'd already qualified. The Korean team won handily, even though the longest rally was a laughable four strokes. Among the best players in the world. (Apparently the Chinese are the best at throwing matches, too.) The referee came down at some point to admonish them for not trying hard enough. The crowd booed them off the court. (via)

this is not a joke.

this is the ACTUAL cover of jerry sandusky's autobiography, published in 2000. no. joke.

how do you fire someone who's already dead?

turns out he's still alive. but not for long:
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Joe Paterno’s tenure as coach of the Penn State football team will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks, in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal that has implicated university officials, according to two people briefed on conversations among the university’s top officials.
The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit, but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious national brand will not survive to coach another season. (via)
thx libby!

here's an interview with a sports journalist lady from YES who attended penn state and has covered their football program. interesting insight.
