john and i were just ctm-ing about this account of what happened when rage against the machine's tom morello showed up at zucchini park yesterday to perform, while the protestors were scrambling to clean up the park and avoid being forcibly evicted this morning:

The cleanup efforts were temporarily derailed on Thursday by the appearance of Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello. Some facilitators were not pleased. As he sung his first song, the leader in the red hat yelled out, "Tom Morello, stop singing and come help us clean." Another: "Tom, I love you, but come on!" A third, older occupier was blunter: "I'm more of a Grateful Dead guy." (via)

Bloomberg, meanwhile, attempted to explain the change of course on his radio show this morning. "Yesterday, as of 8 o’clock at night, they were going ahead to do it, but, as of midnight, they called and said they wanted to postpone the cleaning operations," he said. The mayor went on to blame members of local government for pressuring the park's owners: "My understanding is Brookfield got lots of calls from many elected officials, threatening them and saying if you don't stop this we'll make your life more difficult," he said. "If those elected officials had spent half as much time trying to promote the city to get jobs to come here we would a lot more ways towards answering the concerns of the protesters.

"There has to be some resolution eventually," he added. (via)

If all goes as planned, the New Museum’s five-year-old building on the Bowery will become something of an amusement park beginning Oct. 26, with visitors hurtling through a giant plastic tube from the fourth floor to the second. (via)

Tennessee is in for a rough few weeks, but Simms believes this movie can end with Tennessee getting to the SEC title game.

i just learned that vanessa's dumpling house is coming to williamsburg, expected to open at the end of the month!

Signage went up recently for the Vanessa's Dumpling House branch going in at 310 Bedford, and it seems the dollar-dumpling specialist is aiming to open in late October. It'll be hot on the heels of fellow cheap-eats joints Crif Dogs, the Meatball Shop, and La Esquina, who've all recently rolled out locations across the East River.

If things go as planned, there'll be beer and wine to wash down the dumplings, which will probably go for something like four for $1.29, instead of the four for a buck you find on Eldridge Street. "It’s become a high-priced market over there," says Glaser, but "this is still going to be a very good buy." (via)

In fact, more than half of architecture school graduates don’t enter the profession. Fewer still get licensed, which means that the majority of the best and brightest are held in professional limbo or exit the profession entirely. This has been the status quo for decades, and it’s time for a change. We, the public, need architecture and dignifying spaces now more than ever.

Lest you think this title stuff is just semantics, think again. The profession and the public are measurably worse off because of this issue. While diversity in architecture schools is comparable to law and other fields, architecture remains one of the most elite and homogenous professions, clinging to institutional barriers that have thwarted gender parity and diversity efforts. Massive resources are spent on bureaucracy instead of nurturing a more representative profession to serve our diverse society, and supporting architects to create better, more vibrant public spaces.
