NEWSFLASH: is this new williamsburg honkeytonk going to sell bushwackers?

  The garrulous guys behind popular craft beer dive Lucky Dog have branched out with a new joint just a few blocks away on Metropolitan Avenue, in the former home of Bar Berry. Called Skinny Dennis (after a country music bassist who died onstage in 1975 at the age of 28) the bar perpetuates the laid-back yet well-curated vibe of Lucky Dog, but with a honky-tonk theme. Co-owner Sal Fristensky happens to be a big country music fan, and Skinny Dennis will present live music three nights a week, supplemented by a jukebox that spans the spectrum from country to classic rock.

   Most of the beer is domestic, with 18 craft brews on tap, and all of them running about $5. For good old boys on a budget, Skinny Dennis also serves a 24 oz Coors banquet beer in a mason jar for $4, as well as $3 Bud, PBR and Rolling Rock. Or for $6 you can get a delicious and refreshing Uncle Willie's Frozen Coffee, which comes out of the daiquiri machine Mack bought for $9,000. Ingredients include milk, vanilla, sugar, bourbon, coffee liqueur, brandy, Oslo coffee, and another floater of bourbon on the top for good measure. Skinny Dennis serves it in a classic "Anthora" Greek coffee cup, in case everything else in the joint makes you forget you're still in Brooklyn.

paper magazine and gothamist tell us that the new state of the art 7 screen theater at driggs and grand will be open on wednesday. i can verify that the smell of popcorn has been keeping me up at night.

dine out williamsburg

This Thursday, November 8th, we will be holding Dine Out Williamsburg for Sandy Relief. All restaurants, bars, and businesses need to do to participate is pledge 10-20% of gross sales that night to the Red Cross’ Sandy relief efforts. All diners have to do is dine, drink, and spend money at one (or many!) participating businesses. (via)

Because there aren't enough ways to feel like you're being judged by Williamsburg scenesters the moment you step off the L train, the fashion police have installed a webcam on a Bedford Avenue building. Mounted "a block from the hellmouth" of the Bedford L stop, the "Styleblaster" motion-sensor camera enables the whole world to enjoy an endless, real-time parade of precious hipster runoff. Each photo has a time-stamp showing when it was taken, and you, the Internet, get to decide if the subject is worthy of a "top hat" signifying whether the individual is "stylin'." (via)

grizzly bears are just like you and me

they live in williamsburg, think about their bills all the time, and are secretly jealous of middle class peers that don't have to rent for the rest of their lives and can afford things like children. one thing is different though, they play concerts at radio city music hall, and we pay to see them play concerts at rcmh. still, i'd bone ed droste. read all about it here.

i just learned that vanessa's dumpling house is coming to williamsburg, expected to open at the end of the month!

Signage went up recently for the Vanessa's Dumpling House branch going in at 310 Bedford, and it seems the dollar-dumpling specialist is aiming to open in late October. It'll be hot on the heels of fellow cheap-eats joints Crif Dogs, the Meatball Shop, and La Esquina, who've all recently rolled out locations across the East River.

If things go as planned, there'll be beer and wine to wash down the dumplings, which will probably go for something like four for $1.29, instead of the four for a buck you find on Eldridge Street. "It’s become a high-priced market over there," says Glaser, but "this is still going to be a very good buy." (via)

vanessa's are my second favorite durmps in the city, right behind eton in cobble hill, which i miss terribly and might have to visit soon...
