do you remember the brouhaha during the beijing olympics about some of those little gymnasts looking pretty young. like they looked 12, when they have to be at least 16 to legally compete. and everyone was sort of coughing under their breath because the chinese government was so adamant that they win gold in every event, especially gymnastics, and the chinese athletic programs were all like, "yeah, yeah. these children are all 16, we promise. here, look at these official government records. and here look in her purse, she has tampons and everything."

well the chinese ladies gymnastics team just had their medals taken away. not from the beijing olympics. from sydney, in 2000. thats how long it seems to take to sort these things out. in related news the US ladies gymnastics team from the sydney olympics are now being rewarded the bronze medal. congrats dominique dawes!

this chinese tanker ship crashed into the great barrier reef, and got stuck. over the course of 10 days, the tanker smashed two miles worth of the reef, destroying marine life and spilling oil and other toxic substances into the ecosystem.

ecologists project it will take the reef 20 years to return to its previous state of development.
