feeling #blessed that this didn't happen to me

This morning around 9 a.m., a Brooklyn resident boarded the Manhattan bound N train to find close to 50 kids on the car, all armed with recorders. Trapped in some waking nightmare, each station stop passed and the kids remained, playing their recorders the entire time. In total: forty minutes. (via)
you know what it reminds me of?

Paul William "Bear" Bryant is Spinning in His Grave!

This is some week-old news, but it seems when Bama fans aren't destroying public property, Bama alumni are sexually assaulting unconscious strangers in public.  I can't say I'm surprised.  This quote from CBS 42 in Birmingham sums up the incident using an excellent choice of words [emphasis mine]:
It all stems from a video that went viral showing [Brian] Downing and friends abusing a passed out LSU fan in a burger restaurant on Bourbon Street after the BCS game. Downing's companions performed a series of pranks on the passed out LSU fan and then the man identified now as Downing proceeded to drape his scrotum on the man's head...that led to the sexual battery and obscenity charges.
Here's the NSFW video:

CBS 42 also gives us some insight into who Downing is:
So who is Brian Downing and how did he find himself with both notoriety and a possible lifetime designation as a sex offender? He's married with a wife, a (sic) child. He's already been fired from his job with Hibbett Sports. And he has a second cousin who’s the sheriff of Russell County...Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor recognized his cousin in the video and told him to come on down to the county jail. After checking with New Orleans police, Downing drove to New Orleans to turn himself in.
Fun Fact : Deadspin is reporting that one of the other "gentlemen" in the video is the son of the sports director at the CBS affiliate in Mobile.  So there's something to be proud of all around.

If you want more details on this story, Deadspin has plenty of thorough coverage.

I said it once, and I'll say it again; it's time to DIG HIM UP...F HIS CORPSE!

Gays Have A New Meme: i can haz destroy traditional marriage?

Also, the Republican controlled legislature in New Hampshire might succeed in overturning the states equal marriage law passed in 2009.  Recently State Representative David Bates (R) stopped pursuing a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages, opting instead to simply pass a law replacing the option of marriage for same-sex couples with civil unions.  It's important to mention that the civil unions would be open to any unmarried adults, including relatives, would lack many of the rights granted by marriage, and also would allow "anyone to discriminate against such couples in employment, housing and public accommodations based on religious or moral beliefs" (so basically worthless).

Representative Bates says he his dropping the constitutional amendment because the legislative option is more simple.  It likely has more to do with the fact that a number of polls throughout this year have indicated that a majority of New Hampshire residents support the equal marriage law, and:
A poll from the University of New Hampshire this month showed that 62 percent of residents oppose repealing the same-sex marriage law -- including a plurality of likely Republican primary voters-- while only 27 percent support repealing it.
This means a constitutional amendment would be unlikely to receive the two-thirds voter support required to pass in a referendum.

Governor John Lynch (D) has vowed to veto the bill if passed, and a veto override would take two-thirds of present and voting members in each house.  Along part lines, the Republicans have enough votes to accomplish this, but some aren't convinced a veto override is guaranteed.

The bill has already cleared the House Judicary Committee.

Also, Rick Perry is urging the New Hampshire legislature to repeal the law, but he's probably drunk so who cares.

I've got to say, it's pretty ballsy of Republicans to overturn a law that has a majority of support amongst the people they are tasked with representing.  Usually they're the party crowing on and on about activist judges and legislatures imposing their will on the people, and insisting that questions of same-sex marriage be decided by a referendum.  But a lack of principle is what I've come to expect from them.

mission accomplished!

today, all remaining american combat troops pulled out of iraq. we're leaving behind 50,000 troops for peace-keeping, etc. a lot of civilians in baghdad are still living without electricity and whatnot. but i'm sure everything will turn out fine.
“I don’t think State has ever operated on its own, independent of the U.S. military, in an environment that is quite as threatening on such a large scale,” said James Dobbins, a former ambassador who has seen his share of trouble spots as a special envoy for Afghanistan, Bosnia, Haiti, Kosovo and Somalia. “It is unprecedented in scale.”
White House officials expressed confidence that the transfer to civilians — about 2,400 people who would work at the Baghdad embassy and other diplomatic sites — would be carried out on schedule, and that they could fulfill their mission of helping bring stability to Iraq.
“The really big picture that we have seen in Iraq over the last year and a half to two years is this: the number of violent incidents is significantly down, the competence of Iraqi security forces is significantly up, and politics has emerged as the basic way of doing business in Iraq,” said Antony J. Blinken, the national security adviser to Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. “If that trend continues, and I acknowledge it is an ‘if,’ that creates a much better context for dealing with the very significant and serious problems that remain in Iraq.” (via)
good luck, iraq!

oof.

Chilling classified video of a 2007 collateral damage incident in which U.S. Army Apache helicopter crews apparently mistook Iraqi civilians and Reuters journalists for insurgents was made public by a watchdog group.

According to WikiLeaks, which made the video public on its WikiLeaks.org website, the video shows the mistaken killing of two Reuters journalists, photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen, 22, and his assistant and driver Saeed Chmagh, 40. The site has posted the video on YouTube with the title "Collateral Murder." (via)

quotes from actor babies

It averaged about 120 degrees Fahrenheit. So, yeah, that was hot. I got food bugs. Then I got food poisoning: lost 15 lbs. in three days. That was terrible. Then I fell downstairs. I was carrying the kid [an Iraqi boy whom he befriends in the movie] at the time: not the fake kid, the real one. I couldn’t see the stairs when I was walking down them and I just fell and cracked open my nose, bruised it up — it bled a bit — and twisted my ankle, which stopped us from filming ‘cause I couldn’t walk … There was a lot of fighting going on. The oppressive heat does something to your brain, and on top of that I was in this bomb suit, and I had explosive diarrhea, so was I like, ‘Get this thing off me! I’ve got to find a hole somewhere!’ I hate to say it, but it made me a really cranky cunt. I wanted to punch a lot of people. … Will I go out and and shoot in the desert again for Hurt Locker II? Go fuck yourself. You couldn’t pay me enough money. Even if I wanted to, I just couldn’t — literally couldn’t — do it.
