memphis news

the mayor of memphis, W.W. Herenton, announced that he will resign office today effective July 10. he has decided to focus his energies on fundraising and campaigning to unseat District 9 Congressman Steve Cohen.

The 5 term mayor is a very controversial figure in local politics, often accused of enflaming already irritated race relations in the city, and appointing friends and supporters (and mistresses) to cushy government jobs. a special election will now be held within 90 days so voters can choose their new mayor. there are likely to be several candidates, and an outright majority is not required to win. GULP.

also, he is under investigation by a federal grand jury for some suspicious real estate dealings.

also the city is better off without him. please dont vote for him for anything else ever.

Wasn't his last campaign slogan something like "shake the haters off?" Why wouldn't I vote for that?
