I am so over the winter olympics. Bring back the hot swimmers, specifically my boyfriend Ryan Lochte. Enough with this ice dancing bullshit.

nErD aLeRt again!
it's been a while since we've done one....
The anticipation builds once again as you move toward the building’s central courtyard, a dreamy cylindrical space that is dominated by a grand staircase. A ring of sheet-metal fins climb the full height of the space, accentuating its vertical thrust, and your eye intuitively follows them up past several rows of balconies to a perfect circle of California sky. the carver apartments. low-income housing in los angeles, designed by michael maltzan.
At first glance the building seems to hold itself somewhat aloof from this setting. Its crisp white cylindrical exterior is broken into a series of saw-tooth-like vertical ridges. A pattern of narrow horizontal and vertical windows, designed to keep out the noise and exhaust fumes, contributes to its slightly defensive air.

“Contemplating the Void: Interventions in the Guggenheim Museum,” which opened Friday, features 193 schemes for Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Fifth Avenue rotunda, that corkscrew structure that has delighted many (and also maddened quite a few) since it was built in 1959.
The exhibition is part of the museum’s continuing 50th anniversary celebration, and most of the designs will be auctioned off at an event in March, with proceeds going to future programming. (via)
[Doris] Salcedo’s mash-up submission combines a downward view of the rotunda with a photograph of a New York tenement by the German-born artist Hans Haacke. The tenement photograph, part of his series documenting the holdings of a local real-estate baron, was scheduled to be featured in the 1971 Haacke show at the Guggenheim that was canceled for what were widely believed at the time to be political concerns by the museum’s director.

The Obama administration has decided to give the war in Iraq a new name -- "Operation New Dawn" -- to reflect the reduced role U.S. troops will play in securing the country this year as troop levels fall, according to a memo from Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates.
Since U.S. forces charged across the Kuwaiti border toward Baghdad in 2003, the war has been known as Operation Iraqi Freedom. The new name is scheduled to take effect in September, when U.S. troop levels are supposed to drop to about 50,000.
The change is intended to send a message that the U.S. military's combat role in Iraq is rapidly drawing to a close. In the Feb. 17 memo, Gates wrote to Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top commander for the region, that the name change seeks to "recognize our evolving relationship with the Government of Iraq." (via)
