blackberry shame is real

in today's edition of "the oldest news on the internet", the new york times brings us their latest trend piece, which addresses an issue that 2Pz correspondents DJV and (never trust) starla continue to struggle with on an hourly basis:
“I’m ashamed of it,” said Ms. Crosby, a Los Angeles sales representative who said she had stopped pulling out her BlackBerry at cocktail parties and conferences. In meetings, she says she hides her BlackBerry beneath her iPad for fear clients will see it and judge her.
The BlackBerry was once proudly carried by the high-powered and the elite, but those who still hold one today say the device has become a magnet for mockery and derision from those with iPhones and the latest Android phones. Research in Motion may still be successful selling BlackBerrys in countries like India and Indonesia, but in the United States the company is clinging to less than 5 percent of the smartphone market — down from a dominating 50 percent just three years ago. The company’s future all depends on a much-delayed new phone coming next year; meanwhile RIM recorded a net loss of $753 million in the first half of the year compared with a profit of more than $1 billion a year earlier. shame shame shame.

thx bun-bun!

oooooh ive got good news!

Beyonce is going to be the halftime entertainment of the next super bowl, scheduled for February 3, 2013. They might as well cancel the super bowls after that, because come on... it doesn't get better than that.

tell the NYT what you think of the MTA

the new york times asks readers to give their input on the four proposed MTA fare increase structures:
1) The base fare remains at $2.25. The cost of a 30-day card rises to $125, up from $104, and a weekly card costs $34, up from $29. In addition, the 7 percent bonus on pay-per-ride MetroCards — which gives a rider an extra $1.40 with each $20 placed on the card — is reduced to 5 percent. The express bus fare remains at $5.50.
(Burden comparison: single ride up 0 percent; fare on $20 card up 2 percent; cost of 30-day unlimited card up 20 percent.)
2) The base fare remains at $2.25. The cost of a 30-day card rises to $119. The cost of a weekly card rises to $32. The bonus on pay-per-ride cards is eliminated altogether. The express bus fare remains $5.50.
(Burden comparison: single ride up 0 percent; fare on $20 card up 7 percent; cost of 30-day unlimited card up 14 percent.)
3) The base fare rises to $2.50. The cost of a 30-day card rises to $109, but the cost of a weekly card remains $29. The bonus is eliminated. The express bus fare rises to $6.
(Burden comparison: single ride up 11 percent; fare on $20 card up 18 percent; cost of 30-day unlimited card up 5 percent.)
4) The base fare rises to $2.50. The cost of a 30-day card rises to $112, and the cost of a weekly card rises to $30. The pay-per-ride bonus is kept intact. The express bus fare rises to $6.
(Burden comparison: single ride up 11 percent; fare on $20 card up 11 percent; cost of 30-day unlimited card up 8 percent.)
i vote for #3! i'm sure someone's listening...

joanna newsom is working on some new songs

a pitchfork reader took a (pretty good quality) video from a festival appearance earlier this week. She is singing and playing on the piano a new song called "look and despair" that sounds just great.

what's happening at nassau and mcguinness?

this morning, i walked outside and passed by the WASCO auto parts storefront on the corner of nassau and mcguinness, just like every morning. and for the first time in a year and a half...the door was open!! and look what's inside:

a series of arched steel ribs, and the structure for a bar just exactly where you might expect one, and maybe a cooking area beyond? looks like this corner is about to class itself right up!

i did a little bit of internet research and found this over at new york shitty:
I have received a number of emails voicing concern about what it going to happen to one of Greenpoint’s (and McGuinness Boulevard’s) preeminent features: The WASCO Auto Shop. I have some very good news: last night a liquor license application for an “eating and drinking establishment” was approved for this property.
During the proceedings the applicant, a twenty year Greenpoint resident, assured everyone that 139 Nassau Avenue’s signature feature, “WASCOmobile” (which has been identified as a Chevy Nova*), would be kept! In addition, the garage doors looking upon McGuinness Boulevard— the Champs-Élysées of north Brooklyn— will be converted into large bay windows for patrons’ dining pleasure. This was the source of considerable amusement to a number of gentleman on the panel— one of whom noted that all McGuinness Boulevard has in the way of ambiance are “roaring semis”. But hey, as long as everyone keeps their hands and feet inside at all times things should be just fine— right? (via)
