Hillary Clinton narrowly edged Sarah Palin as the woman Americans admired most in 2009, while President Obama is the landslide winner among men for the second consecutive year.

In the annual USA Today/Gallup poll, the secretary of state continues her reign as the most admired woman in the eyes of Americans, with 16% selecting her. (via)

oh great.

NEW YORK - A suspicious white van parked in the heart of Times Square caused a brief scare Wednesday, prompting the New York Police Department to partially evacuate high-rises and send out a bomb squad that quickly determined the vehicle was safe.

The bomb squad used a robot-based camera to approach the vehicle. Police say the area around 42nd Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway was blocked off as a precaution.

Two high-rise buildings — home to NASDAQ and Conde Nast publishing — were partially evacuated for a brief time.

The van with tinted windows had been parked there for around two days. A placard from a nonexistent law enforcement agency was on the dashboard, and it has no license plates. (via)

don't worry. it was just a bunch of clothes.  thx joey toni.

john, we better hurry!

Bannerman’s Castle was already an enigmatic ruin in the middle of the Hudson River, a dreamy landmark for passing train travelers and a passionate cause for preservationists.

But then in the silence of last Saturday night, a large chunk of history suddenly disappeared when the castle’s stone, brick and cement sighed under a century’s weight of weather. Overnight, two-thirds of the eastern tower was gone, as well as one-third of the adjacent southern wall, leaving a gaping hole and concern over how to stop the crumbling. (via)

thanks a lot!

tales from new jersey.

each morning, as i walk through the breath-taking new jersey landscape on my way to work, the highlight is almost always a pack of feral kitty kats that living around one of the buildings down the street. i usually see a woman that works there who feeds them. the kitties generally keep to themselves, hiding on the steps and peeking out at me through the railing and the bushes.

however, things took a frightening turn this morning when they swarmed in from all directions, and CHASED me down the street. by "chased", of course, i mean followed warily and inquisitively. but they did take turns dashing up ahead of me so i was continuously surrounded. their mommy needs to come back from her christmas vacation soon, because they are clearly blood-thirsty.

there are four kitties in that b-berry pic. see if you can spot them all.

Scott Inoue, now a chiropractor in Stockton, Calif., said the small, black-and-white photo had been stashed away for almost 40 years at his childhood home in Manoa. For some reason, Inoue said, as he was growing up he always remembered that photo and wondered what became of “Barry.” via

It's no longer possible to purchase an iPhone from AT&T's online store if you live in New York City, and as of right now, the carrier isn't saying why. Making matters worse, some online customer service reps have apparently gone rogue in providing explanations to curious would-be customers and the occasional inquisitive blogger -- the Consumerist was told that NYC wasn't "ready for the iPhone," and a few others (including us) were fed a line about credit card fraud causing a ban on online sales. avatar, movie review

spoiler alert...

everything everyone has said about the movie being a feast for the eyes is totally true. i do recommend that you see it in 3D, but im sure it is still beautiful flat. pandora, the moon where the tall blue native americans live, is basically a movie makers wet dream. everything is glowy and swishy and colorful. the movie experience starts to fall apart when you look past the spectacle and consider the story. its like they took jurassic park, independence day, and fern gully and squished them all together. the evil corporation and the trigger happy military are easy villains, and the granola-eating scientists and tree-hugging natives make for simple heros. there is also generous use of one of my pet peeves, voice over narration to explain plot details. when the audience is wondering, why doesnt our paralyzed hero just get his legs fixed since this is the future... james cameron is ready with a voice over ready to tell you that he cant afford the operation and has to go to pandora collect some sort of reward. nifty.

however, im not the kind of movie lover who always needs to be challenged by every film, and i will say that i enjoyed every minute of avatar. it is the perfect complement for a coke icee and movie popcorn. the special effects are perfect, and compensate for whatever weaknesses there may be in the all too familiar story.

meltons go to the movies : that just happened

before i get to the avatar review, i need to tell you about what preceded the opening credits. melissa and i show up half an hour early, to find a pre-line of about 30 of folks waiting to get into the theater. we take our seats and watch as the seats fill up over the next half hour. craig is running late, so we decide to send melissa on a mission to secure his ticket, while i secure our seats. a few minutes after she leaves, 2 young women coming down the aisle have their eye on our seats. i head them off and let them know that these seats are spoken for. they back off, and return a few second later to let me know that i am not allowed to hold seats. i let them know that in fact, i am not "holding seats," and that my seat partners are simply in the restroom. they dont back down, and neither do i. i tell them that i have been sitting there for half an hour, and that insist that my sister just went to the restroom and my brother was at the concession stand. we get to the point where the girls are saying that they will move when "they" come and tell them to. i say fine (melissa and craig are walking up the stairs) "they" are right there, and they will tell them to get out of our seats. melissa engages, and things get heated. apparently they are waiting for someone else to tell them to leave. i suggest that melissa go find a manager. she goes and gets someone, the previews have started. the woman in the seat on my other side now engages and proceeds to let these young women know that she doesn't know me, and she doesn't know them, but that they should be ashamed of themselves, and that i am right because i have been sitting there next to her for half an hour, and that they are SOOOoo rude. gulp. the kid melissa brings back has a uniform, but no obvious authority, so the girls refuse to get out of the seats until the employee finds them two replacement seats together. he comes back and lets them know he found two other seats in the back, and escorts them to their new shitty seats. roll the opening credits.

happy late BEARthday

I'm happy someone is finally putting those terrible gap advertisements in their place. my favorite is the last few seconds:
