memphis karaoke

i went and did karaoke with some friends on saturday at a place here in memphis called yosemite sams. i performed my proud mary standard and threw in a little stevie wonder superstitious.
one of the funniest things that happened was when some meek and mild girl got up and did a very meek and mild version of reba's fancy. one of the girls i was with bribed the karaoke host with 20 bucks to let her follow up with the same song right after meek and mild finished. it was pretty spectacular.

obamas go to europe

barack and his main squeeze michelle are headed off to europe tomorrow for a G20 summit. MObama seems to be stealing most of the headlines and spotlights, but maybe that will change once people realize that our president now decided who works for GM. to me its kind of creepy to have the white house making these kinds of decisions, but i still think some sort of nationalization in this regard makes sense considering how much money these companies have been taking.

Nicolai Ouroussoff studies 4 cities (New Orleans, LA, the Bronx, and Buffalo) in an interesting piece about urban development:

"With their crowded neighborhoods and web of public services, cities are not only invaluable cultural incubators; they are also vastly more efficient than suburbs. But for years they have been neglected, and in many cases forcibly harmed, by policies that favored sprawl over density and conformity over difference.

Such policies have caused many of our urban centers to devolve into generic theme parks and others, like Detroit, to decay into ghost towns. They have also sparked the rise of ecologically unsustainable gated communities and reinforced economic disparities by building walls between racial, ethnic and class groups." (nytimes)

optimism vs. 'optimalism'

In his own life, Ben-Shahar uses three optimalist exercises, which he calls PRP. When he feels down--say, after giving a bad lecture--he grants himself permission (P) to be human. He reminds himself that not every lecture can be a Nobel winner; some will be less effective than others. Next is reconstruction (R). He parses the weak lecture, learning lessons for the future about what works and what doesn't. Finally, there's perspective (P), which involves acknowledging that in the grand scheme of life, one lecture really doesn't matter. (time)
