“There are an unbelievable number of twists and turns in the story arc of Making a Murderer, it feels like it has to be fictional,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming. “Ricciardi and Demos have navigated very complex terrain and skillfully woven together an incredible series that leaves you feeling like you’re right in the middle of the action.” (via)

Our first season was about a murder case few people had heard about. Season Two is a story a gazillion people have heard about: the story of Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier who walked off his post in Afghanistan in 2009 and was captured and held by the Taliban for nearly five years. It’s been in the newspapers and on TV; it’s been the subject of congressional investigations (in fact, this very day, the House Armed Services Committee is releasing a report on the Bergdahl trade)—and it’s an active case in military court.

The Resolute desk is a large, nineteenth-century partners' desk often chosen by presidents of the United States for use in the White House Oval Office as the Oval Office desk. It was a gift from Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880 and was built from the timbers of the British Arctic Exploration ship Resolute. Franklin Roosevelt requested the addition of a door with the presidential seal to conceal his leg braces.[1] Many presidents since Hayes have used the desk at various locations in the White House, but it was Jackie Kennedy who first brought the desk into the Oval Office in 1961 for President John F. Kennedy. It was removed from the White House only once, after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, when President Johnson allowed the desk to go on a traveling exhibition with the Kennedy Presidential Library. After this it was on display in the Smithsonian Institution. President Jimmy Carter brought the desk back to the Oval Office, where Presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush used it. It is currently in use by President Barack Obama. (via)

With the variable force of the waves, the water penetrates the lower end of the tubes and is carried into the subterranean gallery, which collects it and returns it to the sea. In this process the air of the interior of the conduits is pushed to orifices that connect the gallery with the surface of the parade, generating sound vibrations which, given the variations in the diameter and length of the tubes, cover a broad range of musical tones. Broad City, the excellent comedy starring Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, has a season three premiere at last: On Wednesday, Feb. 17, the girls return for a ten episode season airing, as ever, on Comedy Central. That’s just three days after Valentine’s Day, which seems like it would be a really disastrous holiday for the show’s co-stars.
Among the adventures we can expect in season three: “a trip to the DMV, a rat in the apartment, going clubbing, taking on new job responsibilities, visiting Abbi’s dad and new hook ups.” (via)

sorry y'all, nashville is OVER.

It’s a very Nashville way of dressing up standard-issue gentrification in the familiar textures of the city’s heritage — akin to the fiddles and banjos tacked onto pop-country songs that share more musical DNA with hair metal than the Highwaymen. “Authenticity is very important in Nashville,” someone once told me. “If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.”
...
Leonard Cohen, who recorded two of his best albums in Nashville, once sang, “We are ugly, but we have the music.” After every block is lined with towering fake bungalows, after every dive bar is either plowed under or rebranded with artisanal cocktails, after every plank of reclaimed barn wood has been upcycled to provide ambience for boutique comfort food that only the already-comfortable can afford, after every bit of character has been scrubbed out of the alleys and arcades, we may wonder if Music City still has the music after all, and ponder what we lost when we gazed into our gleaming new towers and fell in love with the reflection. "too many beavers in all the wrong places"

Back in the 1940s, Idaho’s Fish and Game Department had a problem: too many beavers in all the wrong places. So they devised a plan to parachute those unwelcome beavers into new habitats. And now somebody has found footage of those parachuting beavers, and it’s wonderful. (via)

did you order your bean boots yet?

L.L. Bean’s offerings have traditionally not been synonymous with cool. The company’s signature items are intended for the unglamorous activity of camping: pragmatic sleeping bags, flannel pajamas, fleeces, and down jackets. But then something happened in 2011: The outdoorsy aesthetic that L.L. Bean had been selling for 100 years became trendy. That’s when the duck-boot shortage first began, and “Bean Boot heartbreak” spread as countless consumers found that retailers didn’t have what they wanted. Every autumn since, business reporters have provided updates on whether the duck boot is selling out. This year’s update? It still is. (via)

well now i'm excited.

The University of Tennessee’s Pride of the Southland Band will bring an East Tennessee treasure to life on Neyland Stadium’s field on Saturday.
At halftime during the UT vs. Georgia game (3:30 p.m. CBS), the band will dedicate its show to Dolly Parton and perform some of her most famous songs including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “I Will Always Love You” and “9 to 5.”
“I looked back through all the years ... the band has never done a tribute totally dedicated to Dolly Parton,” said Dr. Donald Ryder, UT’s Director of Bands.
“Since she’s such an East Tennessee treasure and this is her home and everybody loves her, I said ‘Why not?’ so I sat down and started thinking about show ideas, and basically it evolved into what I think’s going to be a very neat show.” (via)
i know the article says she's busy and won't perform, but i'm going to get every last one of my hopes up anyway.
