squidding is the new tebowing.

today #OWS is "squidding" goldman sachs. it's unclear exactly how this is manifesting itself but it's based on this 2010 matt taibbi quote.

it seems they have made several big squid puppets. they're also promising a dramatic conclusion. i can't wait.

some of their grievances against goldman sachs are wrapped up in their west coast action today to shut down the ports. they have reportedly successfully caused the closing of the ports of portland, oakland, and long beach.

omg mondays

"China Airlines is a proud corporate sponsor of the panda snactuary at Cheng Du and was happy to help out recently with the transfer of a young panda cub to a zoo in the United States of America.
After extensive consultation with the Sanctury's veterinary staff it was concluded that the importance of the panda cub precluded it from traveling in the hold of the aircraft, where attending to its needs would be difficult. Thus China Airlines agreed to donate seats in its Business Traveler First cabin for the panda cub named Squee Squee and his carer, Fu Jiang Lang, seen here sitting in the window seat." via buzzfeed via jalopnik

Would you just look at him! He likes to have a blanket on his lap on the airplane JUST LIKE PEOPLE.

internet news as presented by starla

(NEW BLOG FEATCH!)

starla: do you know what the duggars named their poor dead baby??
starla: jubilee shalom
me: they have a dead baby?
starla: yeah

starla: number 20 peaced out of this world before she was born
me: omgoodness

normally i wouldn't

According to this nyt article, Newt Gingrich is worried about and electromagnetic pulse terrorist attack that would fry our power grid and give rise to roving bands ala Mad Max. Normally i wouldn't give credence to this sort of kookery, but the article happens to coincide with the fact that last night I had my first nightmare in close to a decade. It was all about how there was an attack on the US and what I had to do to save myself and the people around me.

Incredibly telling and depressing spoiler alert: Eventually, I just gave up and got killed.

UPDATE: this jem was in the comments:

"Given that the Republican base doesn't believe in or study science, his scaremongering is one more cynical play on American hysteria born of ignorance."

Dumb comment. FYI I am part of the "Republican Base" and I have a degree in engineering and have done graduate work in Physics. What are your credentials???? A major in art? It's the Democrats that don't believe in science or if they do they believe in bogus science like the idea that "Green" energy is going to solve all our energy problems. I find most liberals are math challenged.
Why?
one reason is that studies show that liberals tend to gravitate to degrees in the liberal arts areas and other "soft" fields like teaching and journalism. They are also always experts in economics yet I see few that have actually studied it.

oof. Burn. I was an art major and i'm a teacher. does that "soft" comment extend to my dependability in  nightmares too?

a grandpa listening to skrillex.

spoiler alert : he prefers foster the people.

nErD aLeRt!

this is the design for a new high-rise by dutch firm MVRDV. does it remind you of anything?

i guess a lot of people were reminded of the world trade center towers exploding. MVRDV responded on facebook saying:
A real media storm has started and we receive threatening emails and calls of angry people calling us Al Qaeda lovers or worse.
MVRDV regrets deeply any connotations The Cloud projects evokes regarding 9/11, it was not our intention.
The Cloud was designed based on parameters such as sunlight, outside spaces, living quality for inhabitants and the city. It is one of many projects in which MVRDV experiments with a raised city level to reinvent the often solitary typology of the skyscraper. It was not our intention to create an image resembling the attacks nor did we see the resemblance during the design process. We sincerely apologize to anyone whose feelings we have hurt, the design was not meant to provoke this.
The design inspiration of The Cloud is visualised in the image here. (via)
ooooooooooooops!

it's really too bad it looks like 9/11, because it's kind of cool otherwise.

we back pat

the lady vols graced new york with their presence this weekend, and they won by like a million, like always. today's times features pat summitt and what might be her final season.
Orange-clad loyalists still follow Summitt and company out of Knoxville wherever they go. Clusters made up a large portion of the crowd at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, when the Lady Vols posted a routine 84-61 victory over DePaul in the second game of the annual Maggie Dixon Classic doubleheader.
...
In the second half of the Baylor game, Summitt walked out to center court to receive the Dixon award, named for the former Army coach who died of heart failure just short of her 29th birthday in 2006. When Summitt passed the Baylor bench on the way back to the locker room, Mulkey broke her timeout huddle and gave her old friend a hug.
“I just told her I loved her,” she said. (via)
