la llotja de lleida by mecanoo
The mountain with the historical cathedral Seu Vella and the Segre river mark the high and low points of the mountainous landscape in which Lleida lies, after Barcelona the second city of Catalonia. On the banks of the Segre, somewhat outside the centre of the city, is coming La Llotja, a large conference centre with a theatre. Mecanoo has interpreted the landscape of Lleida as an exciting decor before which the building has been set down somewhat away from the river. The mise-en-scène is elaborated on three levels of scale. Regarded at the large scale of the region, the building represents a connecting link between the river and the mountain. Viewed at the level of the city, La Llotja and the river forms a balanced composition. At street level the cantilevers of the La Llotja de Lleida conference centre provide protection from sun and rain. (via)

what jail looks like in norway.

this is kind of old news, but i took a took a vacay from the news while in portland, so i'm just getting caught up. what a nicely designed and pleasant space!
If a prisoner should grow tired of such depressing confines, he can always head out to the climbing wall, the recording studio, or the communal kitchen. "In the Norwegian prison system, there's a focus on human rights and respect," prison governor Are Hoida explained last May. "We don't see any of this as unusual." (via)
side note on norway:
Countries track recidivism rates differently, but even an imperfect comparison suggests the Norwegian model works. Within two years of their release, 20% of Norway's prisoners end up back in jail. In the U.K. and the U.S., the figure hovers between 50% and 60%. (via)

still crazy-eyed.

i just love this.

twin sister! what a pleasant surprise.

i left my heart at the fancy acre.

over the weekend, g.animalz and i ran screaming from the heat wave, all the way to sunny portland, oregon, to visit jenny and kevin at the fancy acre! would you like to hear a little about that? thought so.

the first thing you should know is that the acre recently acquired a brand new family member. his name is royal, and he is a tiny bear cub pomeranian.

here he is joining his roommates, patsy, loretta, and wynonna for a hearty breakfast of chicken feed.

the second thing you should know is that despite what royal might tell you, he is not the boss. that title goes to mr. jacky scrapple. he likes to wear t-shirts, and he recently lost his signature snaggletooth. lucky for him, he has three more huge fangs left, and now his tongue has a bit more room to spread out (of his mouth).

i was lucky enough to get the fanciest room on the acre.

more about the chickens: they lay eggs! loretta and wynonna are pretty cool about it, and put them in the coop where they belong, but patsy's kind of a b. she thinks she's special because her eggs are blue, and she hides them under things all around the yard. i tried to help find them, but i wasn't very good at it. anyway, jenny basically made us a whole breakfast from chicken eggs and vegetables from their amazing garden. it was pretty fancy.

while we ate breakfast, we noticed a pretty loud buzzing sound. jenny and kevin just got some bees and a beehive, and a wild swarm showed up to make friends with them. there was like a million.

i could just go on and on about the wonders of the fancy acre forever. we also went on some adventures! for example, we took royal and jacky to peewee puppy play group at the dog park.

we floated down this river.

omg, remember patrick halley? he lives in portland, too! i forgot to take a picture of him, but he came over for our big green egg pizza cookout, and brought his beautiful cornhole boards. he also dropped off the new set of bags i ordered from the cornhole cooperative. aren't they gorge?

we visited kevin's world famous biscuit establishment, pine state biscuits. drool!!

ryan and i played some golf.

on my last night, we dined at park kitchen, which jenny is pretty much the boss of. i can't begin to describe what an enjoyable tasting menu flavor journey we were plied with. god. so good.

sadly, after that meal, it was time for me to head to the airport. i had such an amazing time (thx jenny, kevin, jacky and royal for being just the best hosts!). can't wait to visit again VERY soon.

ps - did you know portland and brooklyn are the same place?

What's for lurnch?

Yesterday afternoon I had a grilled chicken sammy with tomatoes on focaccia with BBQ kettle cooked cheap, cheap, cheaps. not pictured, a fiji water. square water tastes better that round water.

debt ceiling information

just as i suspected. thank you liberal media for confirming my liberal bias.
go for it barry!

James Fallows writes: “The Chart That Should Accompany All Discussions of the Debt Ceiling: It’s this one, from yesterday’s New York Times…It’s based on data from the Congressional Budget Office and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Its significance is not partisan (who’s “to blame” for the deficit) but intellectual. It demonstrates the utter incoherence of being very concerned about a structural federal deficit but ruling out of consideration the policy that was largest single contributor to that deficit, namely the Bush-era tax cuts.”

It’s also worth noting that the debt ceiling was raised by $4 trillion under Bush without incident, and Speaker John Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell approved each of the five increases.

there's no way that's not a cheese ballz container.

read this sad / happy story about a bear in the smokey mountains, rescued from his plastic prison by the kindness of humans.
"On every level he was in a deficit," Hammonds said. "For three weeks he had not eaten, had been breathing his own breath, and the only way he must have been able to drink was by lowering his head under water and filling up the jug." (via)
i won't lie, i woulda liked to've seen that drinking manuever! thx leigh anne!

omg, arizona, get OVER yourselves!

PHOENIX — The massive dust storms that swept through central Arizona this month have stirred up not just clouds of sand but a debate over what to call them.
The blinding waves of brown particles, the most recent of which hit Phoenix on Monday, are caused by thunderstorms that emit gusts of wind, roiling the desert landscape. Use of the term “haboob,” which is what such storms have long been called in the Middle East, has rubbed some Arizona residents the wrong way.
“I am insulted that local TV news crews are now calling this kind of storm a haboob,” Don Yonts, a resident of Gilbert, Ariz., wrote to The Arizona Republic after a particularly fierce, mile-high dust storm swept through the state on July 5. “How do they think our soldiers feel coming back to Arizona and hearing some Middle Eastern term?” (via)
JFC. get the sand out, you racists.
Not everyone was put out by the use of the term. David Wilson of Goodyear, Ariz., said those who wanted to avoid Arabic terms should steer clear of algebra, zero, pajamas and khaki, as well. “Let’s not become so ‘xenophobic’ that we forget to remember that we are citizens of the world, nor fail to recognize the contributions of all cultures to the richness of our language,” he wrote.
i'm glad at least one person in that state has some sense.

ps - i'm fairly sure 'haboob' is the phrase with which the countess greeted everyone in morocco.

where'd kylie go?
