trader joes brooklyn | crime-ridden hellhole

A thief has struck again at the Court Street Trader Joe's on Friday, nabbing a wallet from a woman's unattended purse that she left in her shopping cart. The woman didn't notice her wallet was missing until she went to check out. Last month, police caught a thief in a sting operation after multiple reports of stolen purses from that location. But the next day a thief stole a man's wallet from atop his stroller in the same store. So, can this finally be the incident that teaches people to keep an eye on their stuff in public, or at least when shopping at the crime-ridden hellhole that is Trader Joe's?

ke$ha

is anyone going to go see ke$ha tonight? oh yeah. i am. and ktv.

speaking of books

i read this one a while back and was totally transfixed. i had no idea there was an adaptation in the works, or that it would be made starring carey mulligan and kiera knightley. woop! looks good.

In the first real upset of this year's World Cup, the Swiss (Federer) beat the Spanish (Nadal). They must've been playing on grass.

new kelis

book stuff.

have you read the millenium trilogy yet? the girl with the dragon tattoo? the girl who played with fire? the girl who kicked the hornet's nest? everyone else has. what are you waiting for?

i just finished the second one. i had a weird experience in the nashville airport, where every time i looked up from my book, i would notice someone else was reading it. at least 10 people from where i was sitting. then i heard my name. i looked up, and it was nanners ward! and she said 'i'm reading that, too.' then i got on the plane, and the girl sitting next to me saw it and said 'i just finished that.' and then she pulled out the third one.

anyway, today the new york times writes about the phenomenon, and the effect it's having on the strangely specific scandinavian mystery genre. sweden is so hot right now!

Independent booksellers, giddy over the bump in sales, said that many customers in their stores are just learning about the Millennium series for the first time. At Powell’s in Portland, Mr. Larsson’s books are selling so quickly — at least 1,500 a week — that the store’s grateful employees have given them a nickname.

“We call them ‘The Girl Who’s Paying Our Salaries for the Next Few Months,’ ” said Gerry Donaghy, the new-book purchasing supervisor.

ctm. unfortunately, stieg larsson died (mysteeeeeeriously) before these were even published, so there won't be any more, and no one knows what to read next.

“The question is, after everybody reads ‘Hornet’s Nest,’ what are they going to do?” said Stan Hynds, a book buyer at Northshire Bookstore in Manchester Center, Vt. “I’ve got this funny feeling that every publisher is going to come out with the next Stieg Larsson.”

2Pz friend, tanya, has been slavin' away at PS1 for a few weeks to help create the upcoming installation, called pole dance. our insider reports that she has a blood blister, and can tie many really cool knots. construction wraps up next thursday, and the installation will probably open next weekend. she doesn't really know for sure. and why should she?

Conceived as a participatory environment that reframes the conceptual relationship between humankind and structure, Pole Dance is an interconnected system of poles and bungees whose equilibrium is open to human action and environmental factors. Throughout the courtyard, groups of 25-foot-tall poles on 12 x 12-foot grids connected by bungee cords whose elasticity will cause the poles to gently sway, creating a steady ripple throughout the courtyard space. Each grid contains a number of playful activators, such as hammocks, pulls, misters, and rain collecting plants. An open net covering the entire scope of the grid system will provide shelter and stabilize the movement of the poles, preventing them from exceeding a predetermined maximum pivot. A generous series of multi-colored balls will move above the net offering mutable shade and the appearance of a communal game. (via)

oh, and also, the build accepts volunteers. so if you have a free day, just head on out to PS1 and show them your idle hands.

my goodness.
