what's on tv tonight?

i've often referred to flipping out as my FAVE reality show. and the new season starts tonight! let's see if it still holds the title.

and rachel zoe is on, too. gosh, remember when tuesday nights were the best?

beyonce!

from her new house of dereon campaign

i wasn't aware...

...that vanity fair (and others) writer christopher hitchens has esophageal cancer. he wrote a first-person piece for the upcoming issue detailing his diagnosis and treatment, and it's quite good. (depression alert, oc.)
The notorious stage theory of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, whereby one progresses from denial to rage through bargaining to depression and the eventual bliss of “acceptance,” hasn’t so far had much application in my case. In one way, I suppose, I have been “in denial” for some time, knowingly burning the candle at both ends and finding that it often gives a lovely light. But for precisely that reason, I can’t see myself smiting my brow with shock or hear myself whining about how it’s all so unfair: I have been taunting the Reaper into taking a free scythe in my direction and have now succumbed to something so predictable and banal that it bores even me. twosie tuesday!!!

remember?

meteor shower tonight

the perseid meteor shower is going down tonight. i guess it lasts for a while, and i read somewhere else that it will peak on the 12th. but i'm not going to risk missing it. gawker has a wonderful guide.

the internet says it will start after dark and the best time to watch is between midnight and 5am. like we don't have lives, meteors!

anyway, good luck.

oh and also, there's some kinda planet trifecta going on right now. this helpful diagram should explain everything.

jk:
About an hour after sunset, anyone with a clear and open view of the west-northwest horizon should be able to spot the triangle of three planets shining low in the west. (via)

books

so last night, lillywhitefish told me she was reading a book called the glass castle, and that she thought i would like it. that reminded me that i am in need of a new book.

i just finished reading the ghost map. it's about the 1854 cholera outbreak in victorian london and its influence in urban planning and social mapping and stuff. it's a strange topic, and was a little gross, but i learned a new phrase that really grosses john out, so totally worth it. i would give it 8 or 9 biscuits.

one of the books on my to-read is dead-end gene pool, written by a descendant of cornelius vanderbilt, whose family, the burdens, was rich, but messed up. it's supposed to be real funny, i guess. i also still have to read the third stieg larsson book, the girl who got stung by a bee, or whatever. unfortch, both of these are still only available in hardcover, and i have a real problem buying those.

so. while i wait for lilly to finish her book, and for the other two to come out in paperback, do you have any suggestions for me? what are you reading or have you read? just tell me everything.

maybe i should just read chelsea chelsea bang bang. it has chunk on the cover, after all.

sweet.

In a sign that online streaming is coming to the forefront in Hollywood, films from Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer will appear on Netflix’s streaming service just three months after they appear on pay television.
In a deal announced Tuesday, Netflix will have the streaming rights to feature films like “Iron Man 2″ far earlier than it does now. It is a costly win for Netflix, which has been locking up the rights to films for its “Watch Instantly” service, which allows customers to stream content via the Internet rather than wait for a DVD to arrive in the mail.
