Hillary Clinton narrowly edged Sarah Palin as the woman Americans admired most in 2009, while President Obama is the landslide winner among men for the second consecutive year.

In the annual USA Today/Gallup poll, the secretary of state continues her reign as the most admired woman in the eyes of Americans, with 16% selecting her. (via)

NEW YORK - A suspicious white van parked in the heart of Times Square caused a brief scare Wednesday, prompting the New York Police Department to partially evacuate high-rises and send out a bomb squad that quickly determined the vehicle was safe.

The bomb squad used a robot-based camera to approach the vehicle. Police say the area around 42nd Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway was blocked off as a precaution.

Two high-rise buildings — home to NASDAQ and Conde Nast publishing — were partially evacuated for a brief time.

The van with tinted windows had been parked there for around two days. A placard from a nonexistent law enforcement agency was on the dashboard, and it has no license plates. (via)

don't worry. it was just a bunch of clothes.  thx joey toni.

john, we better hurry!

Bannerman’s Castle was already an enigmatic ruin in the middle of the Hudson River, a dreamy landmark for passing train travelers and a passionate cause for preservationists.

But then in the silence of last Saturday night, a large chunk of history suddenly disappeared when the castle’s stone, brick and cement sighed under a century’s weight of weather. Overnight, two-thirds of the eastern tower was gone, as well as one-third of the adjacent southern wall, leaving a gaping hole and concern over how to stop the crumbling. (via)

now we're going to pay more for airplane rides because people aren't parking at expensive airport lots anymore. i just don't know how many more face-slaps i can take, airline industry.

and why should i care?

tales from new jersey.

each morning, as i walk through the breath-taking new jersey landscape on my way to work, the highlight is almost always a pack of feral kitty kats that living around one of the buildings down the street. i usually see a woman that works there who feeds them. the kitties generally keep to themselves, hiding on the steps and peeking out at me through the railing and the bushes.

however, things took a frightening turn this morning when they swarmed in from all directions, and CHASED me down the street. by "chased", of course, i mean followed warily and inquisitively. but they did take turns dashing up ahead of me so i was continuously surrounded. their mommy needs to come back from her christmas vacation soon, because they are clearly blood-thirsty.

there are four kitties in that b-berry pic. see if you can spot them all.
