4 days until football time in tennessee

#4. Derek Dooley

We all have fond memories of the Philip Fulmer era of Tennessee football. We were excited and nervous when Lane Kiffin took over last season as he was a different kind of coach than we were used to, but there was hope that it might be a good thing.

Turns out Lane Kiffin was self serving jerk who completely disrespected Tennessee athletics, but there are no regrets about what happened last season because it has brought us to where we are now.

DOOLEY TIME.
Little Derek Dooley grew up in Athens, Georgia. His dad, Vince Dooley was the head football coach and athletic director of the third tier university there, his mother Barbara was a radio talk show host. After playing at Virginia Tech, and assistant coaching jobs at Georgia, SMU, LSU, and Miami (NFL), Dooley ended up as the head coach and athletic director at Louisiana Tech. He and his wife (a vagina doctor) have three young kids. This is what coach Dooley has to say about Tennessee football:

"As most of you know, I grew up in this conference. I grew up in the SEC. It didn't take me long as a youngster to realize that Tennessee was the essence of college football. Even as a young kid, watching the team run through the 'T,' when you see checkerboard end zones and, of course, hear 'Rocky Top' - those were vivid memories as a youngster."

It is great to have a new young coach in town with respect for our program and the SEC, but the real test will be played out between the hedges, under the lights, over the course of the upcoming seasons. I've got my fingers crossed and hopes set on an SEC championship and national title run within the next 5 years. GOOD LUCK DEREK DOOLEY!!

ps. i just watched that "run through the T" video and got real goosebumps!

raccoons are the new bedbugs!

Raccoons may be wild animals, but they’re no longer a rarity in the city. They seem to be appearing in greater numbers and, like true New Yorkers, seem to be behaving much more boldly.
From Queens to Brooklyn and the Bronx, New Yorkers are coming across them in usual and also in unusual places: on stoops and rooftops, by bird feeders and garbage cans, on the edge of above-ground pools, even inside kitchen drawers. (via)

A fire at the future site of a mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, is under investigation but "you can reasonably make the assumption" that it was arson, an FBI spokesman told CNN Sunday.
"The evidence is being analyzed to see what the origin of the fire was," Keith Moses, an assistant special agent with the FBI in Nashville, told CNN Sunday. "We have to follow the facts."
The fire, which struck early Saturday morning at the future site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, is under investigation by the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.
The fire consumed an earth mover and damaged three other vehicles, according to Camie Ayash, a spokesperson for the mosque. Ayash said that the Mufreesboro Fire Department told her that the vehicles had been doused with an accelerant. (via)

10. the pride of the southland marching band
9. smokey
8. rocky top

7. the color orange!!

this should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me. orange is my favorite color. just ask anything i own. like my bike.

pantone 151c = where it's at.

6. eric berry!! gerald jones!!

now that eric berry is all grown up and playing in the NFL, and modesty hardesty, too...it's time for me to pick my new favorite player. now, i don't know that much about our current team. i wanted nothing more than for bryce brown bearz to step up and be my next favorite. but he ruined everything.

regardless, i'm delighted to announce that this year, i'm so excited to see gerald jones on the field. some reasons i love him: he's ceeyute, he likes to sing, he likes to dance, he has the same birthday as ktv, and he embearasses georgia regularly.

just sayin'... be sure to keep your peepers on number 14 4. he's a show-stopper!

5. trash talking

ugh. georgia is the worst. their colors are red and black, which are ugly and boring. and they can never beat tennessee. it's like, if you put adult clothes on a bunch of toddlers and sent them out onto a football field...THAT's what it's like when georgia plays.

don't even get me started on florida. they repeatedly have poor wardrobe choices, they think their quarterback is so great, and their stadium is totes UgLy!

and auburn. second-rate at just about everything. guh-ross! their mascot is "tigers" but they yell "war eagle" like it makes any sense at all. that is 1) not an acceptible greeting, 2) not your mascot, and 3) not even an animal. more like "butt eagle".

and the same goes for the rest of you.

to be fair, the SEC is the greatest conference in all of college football, and i'd rather see all of these teams win than anyone in the big 10, especially the mf-ing nittany kitty katz. me-ouch!

harnessing the power of the internet...

...to make telephone calls.
Google entered a new business beyond Internet search on Wednesday with a service within Gmail to make phone calls over the Web to landlines or cellphones.
The service will thrust Google into direct competition with Skype, the Internet telephone company, and with telecommunications providers. It could also make Google a more ubiquitous part of people’s social interactions by uniting the service for phone calls with e-mail, text messages and video chats.
“It’s one place where you can get in touch with the people that you care about, and how that happens from a network perspective is less important,” said Charles S. Golvin, a telecommunications analyst at Forrester Research.
Gmail has offered voice and video chat for two years, but both parties must be at their computers. Google said the new service would work well for people in a spot with poor cellphone reception or for those making a quick call from their desk. (via)

jim furyk oversleeps, misses professional golf tee time.

American golfer and world number six, Jim Furyk, was kicked out of the first FedEx Cup play-off on Wednesday after missing his tee-off time by oversleeping.
Furyk, 40, told the official website of PGA Tour that he set an alarm on his cell phone which ran out of power overnight and failed to wake him up.
"The hotel had power ... but somehow my phone died. I never use a backup because I just figure if the phone is charged, I'm good to go," Furyk said.
After waking five minutes before he was due to start playing, Furyk made a dash from his hotel to the course but failed to get to the 11th tee of The Barclays tournament in New Jersey in time.
Injury or family emergency are the only reasons that excuse a player's absence, consequently, Furyk will miss Thursday's planned round with countryman Steve Stricker and Ernie Els of South Africa. (via)

not in my back yard!

two stories this week about what new yorkers (and out-of-towners) don't want built in our fair city:

a lot of people have been saying that feisal abdul rauf, the imam heading up the park 51 community center in tribeca, has connections to unsavory people in countries like saudi arabia. perhaps i was wrong about defending this whole "ground zero mosque thing".

saudi prince alwaleed bin talal has donated over $300,000 into the park 51 project, and also heads the kingdom foundation, which supposedly funds radical madrasas. that's not good, and personally it's enough to make me second guess myself. any institution having a connection to a radical saudi prince is clearly a terrorist organization.

also deeply connected to prince alwaleed bin talal? fox news. outside of the murdoch family, prince alwaleed is the largest share holder of news corp, the parent company of FNN. woooooooooopppsss! i was just joking about that whole second guessing thing. they should definitely build that mosque. [wnd]

in other news:

With the amount of controversy greeting the proposed construction of 15 Penn Plaza, you would think Muslims wanted to pray inside of it. The owner of the empire state building is unhappy about a proposed 1,216 ft tall skyscraper a few blocks from the 1,250 ft tall landmark. they believe it will destroy new york's iconic skyline. it's an interesting comparison to the park 51 controversy, as this land use issue has none of the religious, political or emotional pitfalls faced by the islamic community center. i would be interested to know if sarah palin "refudiates" this planned development for it's unnecessary and provocative impact on the city's skyline. probably not. she's never been big on conservation.

kylie thinks 15 penn plaza looks like an uncircumcised penis, and i have to agree. we already have one of those in jersey city, thank you very much.

update: (the city council has taken the first step to approving the 15 penn plaza design)

oh my.

look very closely.

bloomberg = totes exactly right

mayor bloomberg spoke yesterday, defending the "ground zero mosque" aka tribeca muslim clurb.
"But if we say that a mosque and community center should not be built near the perimeter of the World Trade Center site, we would compromise our commitment to fighting terror with freedom.
"We would undercut the values and principles that so many heroes died protecting. We would feed the false impressions that some Americans have about Muslims. We would send a signal around the world that Muslim Americans may be equal in the eyes of the law, but separate in the eyes of their countrymen. And we would hand a valuable propaganda tool to terrorist recruiters, who spread the fallacy that America is at war with Islam.
"Islam did not attack the World Trade Center-–Al-Qaeda did. To implicate all of Islam for the actions of a few who twisted a great religion is unfair and un-American. Today we are not at war with Islam—we are at war with Al-Qaeda and other extremists who hate freedom. (via)
i just think his speech very eloquently and clearly explains exactly how us rational folks feel about this controversial topic. i hope everyone chills and stops stabbing each other.

where do i start.

I wanna see your peacock, cock, cock
Your peacock, cock
Your peacock, cock, cock
Your peacock
I wanna see your peacock, cock, cock
Your peacock, cock
Your peacock, cock, cock
Your peacock

Word on the street, you got somethin' to show me, ee
Magical, colorful, Mr. Mystery, ee
I'm intrigued, for a peek, Heard it's fascinating
Words are mislead
Such a tease
Wanna see the show
In 3D, a movie
Heard it's beautiful
Be the judge
And my girls gonna take a bow

I want the jaw droppin, eye popin, head turnin, body shockin
(Uh, uh, oh, Uh, uh, uh, oh)
I want my heart throbbin, ground shakin, show stoppin, amazin
(Uh, uh, oh, Uh, uh, uh, oh)

Are you brave enough to let me see your peacock?
Don't be a chicken boy, stop acting like a beeotch
I'ma peace out if you don't give me the pay off
Come on baby let me see
What you're hiding underneath
Are you brave enough to let me see your peacock?
What you're waiting for, it's time for you to show it off
Don't be a shy kinda guy I'll bet it's beautiful
Come on baby let me see
Whatchu hidin' underneath
I wanna see your peacock, cock, cock
Your peacock, cock
Your peacock, cock, cock
Your peacock
I wanna see your peacock, cock, cock
Your peacock, cock
Your peacock, cock, cock
Your peacock

nErD aLeRt!!!

Small Scale, Big Change: New Architectures of Social Engagement, a new exhibit slated to open at MOMA on october 3rd, will present "eleven architectural projects on five continents that respond to localized needs in underserved communities."

one such project is the auburn university / rural studio 20,000 dollar house, which endeavors to develop a prototypical house costing less than the 20,000 dollars provided through the rural housing direct 502 loan.

i think MOMA charges about 20,000 doll hairs to get in these days. amiright? waaa waaaaa.

a new beach house song

Beach House - White Moon (Itunes Session) by subpop

Baltimore dreamers Beach House sound a whole lot different live than they do on record, especially when they're working with their recently expanded live lineup. So even if you don't like paying for the same songs twice, Beach House's new iTunes Sessions EP might be worth checking out. For the EP, the band-- in three-piece form-- turned in reworked versions of five old songs, as well as one completely new one: "White Moon", which you can stream above.

john's counterfeit penny

i heard a story at some point over the past couple weeks about john getting a counterfeit penny with some sort of shield on the the back of it. i was confused because why would anyone ever go the trouble to make a fake penny. it already costs more to fabicate a one cent piece then the value of the currency itself. anyway, turns out john threw away real money. i bet he really regrets that now. think of all he could have accomplished with that penny. more info on the redesign here. via.
