have you read the millenium trilogy yet? the girl with the dragon tattoo? the girl who played with fire? the girl who kicked the hornet's nest? everyone else has. what are you waiting for?
i just finished the second one. i had a weird experience in the nashville airport, where every time i looked up from my book, i would notice someone else was reading it. at least 10 people from where i was sitting. then i heard my name. i looked up, and it was nanners ward! and she said 'i'm reading that, too.' then i got on the plane, and the girl sitting next to me saw it and said 'i just finished that.' and then she pulled out the third one.
anyway, today the new york times writes about the phenomenon, and the effect it's having on the strangely specific scandinavian mystery genre. sweden is so hot right now!
Independent booksellers, giddy over the bump in sales, said that many customers in their stores are just learning about the Millennium series for the first time. At Powell’s in Portland, Mr. Larsson’s books are selling so quickly — at least 1,500 a week — that the store’s grateful employees have given them a nickname.
“We call them ‘The Girl Who’s Paying Our Salaries for the Next Few Months,’ ” said Gerry Donaghy, the new-book purchasing supervisor.
ctm. unfortunately, stieg larsson died (mysteeeeeeriously) before these were even published, so there won't be any more, and no one knows what to read next.
“The question is, after everybody reads ‘Hornet’s Nest,’ what are they going to do?” said Stan Hynds, a book buyer at Northshire Bookstore in Manchester Center, Vt. “I’ve got this funny feeling that every publisher is going to come out with the next Stieg Larsson.”
