In late June, after a five-hour drive, Francis arrived at the Eastern National tournament in Erie, Pa. For an hour he attracted old friends and a few autograph and picture seekers. When he settled onto one of the courts to warm up, people crowded for the best view.
“He’s the man I came to watch,” one man said to another.
