vermont is for gay lovers

vermont made history today as the fourth US state to legalize same-sex marriage, and the first to do so through the legislature. governor jim douglas attempted to veto the bill, HR 275, but was overturned by an overwhelming majority of senate representatives (23-5; well more than the two thirds requirement). marriages will begin on september 1st 2009.

the new bill replaces a pre-existing law, signed on April 25th, 2000 by former governor howard dean, which grants civil-unions to same-sex couples in vermont.

a study by UCLA this past march determined that same-sex marriage in vermont would create nearly 700 new jobs, and generate over 30 million in business activity throughout the following three years, which would increase state and local sales tax revenue by over 3 million.

i think we can all safely conclude that homosexuality will single handedly save vermont from the recession.
