they can raise my fares all they want as long as they spend it on puppies!
You’ve heard of the Six Million Dollar Man. How about the Six Thousand Dollar Dog?
That’s how much the Metropolitan Transportation Authority pays for each of its elite, highly trained, drug-sniffing, crime-fighting German Shepherds.
The dogs travel around the mass transit system with a police officer companion, checking out unattended packages and chasing down criminals. Something tells us they would eat Westminster’s Sadie for dessert.
The transportation authority police, who patrol the region’s buses and rails, have 45 of the perp-busting canines. The New York Police Department has 86 dogs, and the Port Authority police keep 46 on hand, officials said.
Last month, the authority’s board approved the purchase of six additional dogs at a cost of $35,800 (some training included). The dogs, which will replace older dogs “that have been retired due to age and health issues,” were bought from Connecticut Canine Services, a training center with dozens of municipal clients along the Eastern Seaboard.
