debt clurk

has your chest tightened today? [U.S. national debt clock : real time]

It's just that easy.

Zach Motl is a guy with a tiny apartment in Brooklyn. By virtue of his minescule living space, the Times thought it important to write about how novel living in a small apartment can be. I've read this sort of story before, "only in NY! amiright?" Close to 1000 doll hairs for 178 square feet. Fine, you are being fleeced, but what really g's my g, is this postscript:

"By November of 2008, Mr. Motl wanted just one (full-time) job. He was still waiting tables to support himself while he worked part time for Mr. Redd. A friend showed him a posting on Craigslist by Robert Couturier & Associates, the upscale architecture and design firm.

The ad was for a junior designer, with three years’ experience and knowledge of AutoCAD, the computer drafting program. Mr. Motl didn’t meet either of those requirements, but he did have pictures of this apartment. He got the job."

It's just that easy. sigh.

The reason this is so frustrating at this very moment is that I am a qualified candidate with a master's degree sitting at a two-day job fair in Boston with only 1 interview scheduled, for a job in Arizona. The worst part is, I forgot to bring pictures of my quirky apartment.

truer words ain't never been spoke

in an interview with yale daily news, denise scott brown said this when asked if she had any words of wisdom for aspiring architecture students:

"Architecture is a difficult career. You probably shouldn’t be an architect unless you absolutely have to because it’s a hard career, you will never earn very much, you’ll work long hours, it’s not up to you when you work, and it can be very heartbreaking when everything you want to do you find you can’t do."

this is a woman who in 1991, along with her husband robert venturi, won the highest honor an architect can win, the pritzker prize. if after all that, this is her perspective on the profession, we are defs all screwed.

Whytes Only

A new Basketball league is forming in Augusta, Georgia. The group is open to "players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race." The theory is that there is a fundamental difference between the way that players of different races apprach the game of basketball. The founder, Don "Moose" Lewis, appears to hope that his league will be comprised of like-minded individuals who will complete chest passes and bank shots. As a coach and a player, I can promise you, dear readers, that Moose is in for a rude awakening. The game of basketball has changed. MORE

*Hoosiers, not Moose.

no shit sherlock

"According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, no one saw a higher rate of unemployment than architects, with the profession declining 17.8 percent."

08 January 2010

oh, brother.

Here’s a rundown of occupations that were among the worst hit in 2009. (Data is from the BLS and looks at the employment picture through the third quarter of this year, the most recent occupational comparative data available.)

1. Architects

A feature in BusinessWeek earlier this year asked: “How Can Architects Survive the Recession?”

Alas, many did not.

Job losses in the profession jumped 17.8 percent, bringing the total number of employed architects to 189,000 in the first three quarters of 2009, compared to 230,000 in the same period a year earlier, according to the BLS.

Clearly, tough times in the construction industry did a number on architectural jobs, but better days are expected.

The BLS’ most recent Monthly Labor Review that looks at employment projections through 2018 shows that architecture and engineering occupations will grow by about 10 percent. (via)

the rest of the list consisted of:

2. carpenters
3. production managers and assembly workers
4. pilots
5. computer software engineers
6. mechanical engineers
7. construction workers
8. tellers
9. bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks

i think at least one person in my extended family falls into each of these categories. ;(

some memphis news

Tommy West, whose nine seasons as University of Memphis football coach rank as the fourth-longest run in school history, was fired today during a morning meeting with athletic director R.C. Johnson.

Johnson's decision came two days after the Tigers dropped a 56-28 decision to Tennessee in Knoxville to fall to 2-7 and assure the U of M of its third losing season in four years. In his nine seasons, West is 49-58.
