"Broadway will feature an eight-lane, 180-foot long, 58-foot-high toboggan run able to handle up to 1,000 riders an hour. The run — between 40th and 41st Sts. — will be open from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1, the day before Super Bowl XLVIII is played at MetLife Stadium. The plans for the toboggan ride, along with other events and exhibits, will be officially unveiled on Tuesday." via

New York's Times Square may be getting a new tenant: a seven-story aquarium.

Jerry Shefsky, a Toronto-based developer, said on Wednesday that he has signed a preliminary agreement with the landlord of an office tower on the western edge of Times Square to go forward with the $100 million project. He would install tanks featuring sharks, rays, penguins, otters, and other animals in the bottom floors of the 40-story building, known as 11 Times Square, hoping to attract some of the 35 million people who pass through Manhattan's major crossroads every year.

Mr. Shefsky, 76 years old, has built aquariums and shopping centers around the world. He cautioned in an interview that the lease agreement for 11 Times Square isn't yet final. But he said he may start building out the space as early as this April with the hope of opening the aquarium in September 2011. (via)

NEW YORK - A suspicious white van parked in the heart of Times Square caused a brief scare Wednesday, prompting the New York Police Department to partially evacuate high-rises and send out a bomb squad that quickly determined the vehicle was safe.

The bomb squad used a robot-based camera to approach the vehicle. Police say the area around 42nd Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway was blocked off as a precaution.

Two high-rise buildings — home to NASDAQ and Conde Nast publishing — were partially evacuated for a brief time. 

The van with tinted windows had been parked there for around two days. A placard from a nonexistent law enforcement agency was on the dashboard, and it has no license plates. (via)

not be be outdone by the bike king stacked up in the east village, times square goes all out using up their beach chairs for this chair king. these flimsy chairs are being replaced with sturdier street furniture.

susan dominus at the new york times is whining because the new pedestrian friendly street parks all over the city use cheap temporary furniture. um susan don't be stupid. people love those little parks. i can't believe you are complaining because times square isn't crowded and annoying like it used to be. also, the folding chairs are charming and you should be praising the city for not wasting money. its a recession you know.

Here is an interesting article from nymag about some changes being implemented reshaping traffic and pedestrian patterns around times square, and the city's transportation commissioner championing the cause. Change never comes easy in any city, much less one with as many self important and self righteous constituents as midtown manhattan, but Janette Sadik-Kahn (seen here with JayZ) has been waging guerrila warfare on the city streets, reclaiming empty city space for pedestrians under the guise of streamlining traffic flow.

its really interesting how this feature about these specific changes to times square becomes a larger story about gender issues in new york politics, old guard vs progressive ideals, and us vs them populist issues. read it bitches.
