i hope you're all following gawker's "new york's best restaurant is:" series.
the two best gawker writers, caity weaver and rich juzwiak have been doing this series where they go to touristy restaurants in the city and tell us what they're like. the latest one was an all-drinking feature at the restaurant in the 5th avenue tommy bahama's store. here's an excerpt:
Rich: This idea of yours made me wonder if you've been regarding me with jealousy during our "Best Restaurant in New York" excursions, since I generally get a drink (fine, two drinks) and you never do. Are you envious of my champagne-sipping lifestyle?
Caity: Absolutely not. I love Diet Coke. Diet Coke is my favorite thing to drink. My second favorite thing to drink, I have recently learned, is "Coconut Cloud Martini" from the Tommy Bahama store on 5th Avenue. That was the first cocktail I ordered this afternoon, and I remember it like it was yesterday.joel and thomas wilhelm and i are going to go if anyone feels like joining?

busted.
In order, the top five Brooklyn neighborhoods where binge drinkers live are Greenpoint; Downtown Brooklyn/Brooklyn Heights/Park Slope (yeah, the DoH counts these very disparate ‘hoods as one place, so); Bed-Stuy/Crown Heights; East New York/New Lots; and Sunset Park. (via)#glugglugglug

Click here to read this interview with Kellan and Davin Bartosch, some friends of mine who are opening a new brewery in Memphis this year.
I really appreciated the last question in the interview, because Davin's answer touches on an ongoing dialog about craft beer that Kylie and I have been having recently.
Are you planning to offer tours?
Absolutely. We plan on doing tons of education, because it's extremely important to us. Appreciation and education go hand in hand. This may be a stretch, but take mayonnaise for example. It's really a pretty simple thing, an emulsion of oil and acid. But, if you learn how to make it, and you understand the principles at hand, then you can enjoy an amazing fresh sandwich spread, and you realize that there's much versatility in the world of mayonnaise. Hellmans is just white vinegar and vegetable oil, but you could make it with sherry vinegar and olive oil. You could throw a garlic clove in there. You could make it with lemon juice and peanut oil. You might even go so far as to make it with bacon fat and balsamic vinegar if you wanted something rich. Then you think to yourself, "Holy $@#!, I always liked mayonnaise, but this is the best mayonnaise I have ever had. I can't believe I have been haphazardly coating buns with this stuff and never thinking about what an amazing thing this is. This mayonnaise is an absolutely divine substance." We would love for more people to think about beer like I think of mayo (although it is significantly more scientifically complicated than mayonnaise). That said, I love giving tours. The brewery is a fascinating place and the magic of turning sugar into alcohol is something that should be explained to everyone.

get to know claire mccaskill's daughters.
they seem pretty cool!
How did you celebrate her victory?
M: Drank heavily.
L: This was the first election I was old enough to stay up with the adults, so it was really fun.
The next morning, style blogs had declared you a “pleasant surprise” and the “style breakout stars” of the election. Tell me about your style.
M: I like a lot of ugly things, like mixing three different patterns in the same outfit and wearing shoulder pads. I'm not a big fan of matching. There is nothing that can't be improved with a bold lip. The dress I wore on election night is from BCBG.
L: The blue-sleeve sweater and my pants were Theory. I found the top at Beacon's Closet. As for my style, I like dressing like a boy most of the time. (via)

what's happening at nassau and mcguinness?
a series of arched steel ribs, and the structure for a bar just exactly where you might expect one, and maybe a cooking area beyond? looks like this corner is about to class itself right up!
i did a little bit of internet research and found this over at new york shitty:
I have received a number of emails voicing concern about what it going to happen to one of Greenpoint’s (and McGuinness Boulevard’s) preeminent features: The WASCO Auto Shop. I have some very good news: last night a liquor license application for an “eating and drinking establishment” was approved for this property.
During the proceedings the applicant, a twenty year Greenpoint resident, assured everyone that 139 Nassau Avenue’s signature feature, “WASCOmobile” (which has been identified as a Chevy Nova*), would be kept! In addition, the garage doors looking upon McGuinness Boulevard— the Champs-Élysées of north Brooklyn— will be converted into large bay windows for patrons’ dining pleasure. This was the source of considerable amusement to a number of gentleman on the panel— one of whom noted that all McGuinness Boulevard has in the way of ambiance are “roaring semis”. But hey, as long as everyone keeps their hands and feet inside at all times things should be just fine— right? (via)

3 DAYS!!!!!!
originally purblished in august 2009.
the countdown continues:
10. the pride of the southland marching band
9. smokey
8. rocky top
7. the color orange
6. eric berry
5. trash talking
4.lane kiffin derek dooley
3. tailgating!
everyone knows that half the fun of college football takes place before the players even take the field. tailgating is a mainstay of any successful gameday, and i would argue that no one does it better than the SEC. the term refers to the act of partying on or around the tailgate of a vehicle. however, this practice has evolved into a staple of college football tradition and culture.
from the grove of ole miss to the decks of the vol navy, fans have been known to wake up at all hours of the morning to get a head-start on the day's festivities. a noon kickoff means you better be outside and drinking by 8am at the latest. rules is rules, and i don't make them.
no tailgate would be complete without the phenomenon of cornhole, which has taken the world by storm over the past decade. the crisp thud of a well-worn bag on a warm fall afternoon is enough to jolt the volunteer heart right out of the past nine vacuous months of football-less-ness.
so everyone drag out the bags-and-boards, plug in the jambox, and fire up the grill, because football season arrives tomorrow, the vols take the field in 3 short days, and those natty lights aren't going to drink themselves!!!
