in arizona, the snow is made out of poop

as you can well imagine some people are happy about it, but other people are not happy about it. nytimes

basically if you think those mountains are holy because that is where g-d lives, or if you care about the potential ecological effects of covering an entire mountain in effluence, then you do NOT want any ski resorts over there. if you think, whatever, a mouthful of poop snow never hurt anyone, and think of all the money we could make, then you DO want a ski resort.

I say, better safe than sorry, lets not go spreading our shit around like a nasty kid in an elementary school restroom. also, where are you papers?

omg, arizona, get OVER yourselves!

PHOENIX — The massive dust storms that swept through central Arizona this month have stirred up not just clouds of sand but a debate over what to call them.
The blinding waves of brown particles, the most recent of which hit Phoenix on Monday, are caused by thunderstorms that emit gusts of wind, roiling the desert landscape. Use of the term “haboob,” which is what such storms have long been called in the Middle East, has rubbed some Arizona residents the wrong way.
“I am insulted that local TV news crews are now calling this kind of storm a haboob,” Don Yonts, a resident of Gilbert, Ariz., wrote to The Arizona Republic after a particularly fierce, mile-high dust storm swept through the state on July 5. “How do they think our soldiers feel coming back to Arizona and hearing some Middle Eastern term?” (via)
JFC. get the sand out, you racists.
Not everyone was put out by the use of the term. David Wilson of Goodyear, Ariz., said those who wanted to avoid Arabic terms should steer clear of algebra, zero, pajamas and khaki, as well. “Let’s not become so ‘xenophobic’ that we forget to remember that we are citizens of the world, nor fail to recognize the contributions of all cultures to the richness of our language,” he wrote.
i'm glad at least one person in that state has some sense.

ps - i'm fairly sure 'haboob' is the phrase with which the countess greeted everyone in morocco.

arizona's on fire.

More than 2,500 firefighters were combating the blaze as of Tuesday morning, officials said. Four structures had been lost, but hundreds more were threatened.
“It’s hard to breathe,” said Judy Cline, who runs an antiques shop in Greer and was packing her possessions into her pickup truck Monday as the winds whipped and the smoke rolled in. “It’s like a thick fog. You can’t see anything.” (via)

love you rachel maddow

did you hear the one about the former congressman from arizona who said that allowing gay marriage paves the way for marriage between a man and a horse? i know, it sounds ridiculous. unfortunately, there are lots of people out there who listen to that kind of bullshit and believe it. thankfully rachel maddow is also out there to set things straight (or gay).

what a dreamboat.

Obama joked that maybe he should have picked the Sun Devils in his NCAA bracket, but that the ASU board should expect an IRS audit soon anyway. After much uproarious laughter, Obama put on his serious face and turned ASU's snub into a life lesson. "I come to embrace the notion that I haven't done enough in my life," he said. "No matter how much you've done, or how successful you've been, there's always more to do, always more to learn, and always more to achieve." (nymag)
