deep impact in russia
how amazing
A meteor estimated to weigh 10 tons and traveling at 33,000 mph exploded over western Siberia in Russia early Friday. The explosion injured some 500 people who were hit mostly by glass that was broken by the boom. The explosion, captured on amateur video, broke windows, set off car alarms, and disrupted cell phone service in Russia's Ural mountains near Chelyabins, Reuters reports. A zinc factory was reportedly damaged by falling fragments

this corgi has an amazing story
A Welsh Corgi named Ole, who managed to survive the avalanche that killed one of his owners, surprised his family by showing up four days later at their motel room in Cooke City, Montana.
“I just saw it outside sitting by the room, which is pretty amazing,” said avalanche specialist Mark Staples.
Dave Gaillard of Bozeman was killed after being buried by an avalanche southeast of town in Hayden Creek. His wife Kerry managed to escape by clinging to a tree.
“His last words to me were, ‘Retreat to the trees.’ I think he saw what was coming from above, that I did not see. That reflects Dave’s amazing quality — thinking of others,” she told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.
Ole was believed to have been buried under the snow as well, but must have tunneled his way out. Still, the trek back to Cooke City was likely treacherous, with temperatures below freezing, and deep snow that would be taxing for the dog’s short legs.
“How in the world he made it, I don’t know,” said Kay Whittle, the wife of a local businessman who returned the pup to his family. “If he could just talk — who knows what he did from the day of the avalanche until today?”

interesting follow-up
remember yesterday, when i showed you that clip of tea party jerks wooting the idea of letting uninsured sick people die? here's a real-life scenario of that happening.
As it turns out, Paul was not speaking purely in hypotheticals. Back in 2008, Kent Snyder — Paul's former campaign chairman — died of complications from pneumonia. Like the man in Blitzer's example, the 49-year-old Snyder (pictured) was relatively young and seemingly healthy* when the illness struck. He was also uninsured. When he died on June 26, 2008, two weeks after Paul withdrew his first bid for the presidency, his hospital costs amounted to $400,000. The bill was handed to Snyder's surviving mother (pictured, left), who was incapable of paying. Friends launched a website to solicit donations. (via)and it seems he wasn't uninsured in some great show of individual liberty, but that a pre-existing condition caused his premiums to be out of financial reach.

see, joey? everyone's thinking it.
STATE COLLEGE, PA—Hospitalized after a receiver crashed into him on the field last Sunday, Joe Paterno’s return to practice Wednesday came as a vast relief to Penn State players, all of whom live in constant fear of being the one who inevitably kills the 84-year-old head coach.
“Every day we go to the field worried about which one of us will accidentally bump into Coach, cause his entire body to fall apart, and kill him,” senior defensive end Jack Crawford said. “There’s no doubt we are going to be the ones responsible for his death. That’s inevitable. It’s just a question of who and when."
“At this point, it’s part of the Happy Valley tradition," Crawford added. "No names on the jerseys, ringing the victory bell, and being very, very careful not to be the reason Coach Paterno dies." (via)i feel...something.

what a delicious way to go.
A 22-year-old tortilla factory worker in Brooklyn was fatally injured in a freakish accident early Monday when he fell into a dough-mixing machine, the police said. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was working at Tortilleria Chinantla at 975 Grand Street in East Williamsburg around 2:30 a.m. when he fell into the waist-high tub of the mixer and was pinned by the metal blade, which is not sharp but is powered by a strong motor, the police said. The half-dozen other workers were unable to save him. No criminality is suspected. (via)
