this morning, the latest episode of marc maron's podcast was released, wherein he candidly interviews president barack obama. it's remarkable.

and in a true snake-eating-its-tail moment, this afternoon marc was featured on fresh air to talk to terry gross about the experience, just a couple of weeks after marc interviewed terry for radiolovefest.

it's not tuesday, but this fresh air interview is not conducted by terry gross, so we'll bend the rules a little.

if you'd like to add a little excitement and intrigue and organized criminal history to your day, take a listen at this interview with the authors of a new book about notorious boston gangtser, whitey bulger. you might remember him from jack nicholson in the departed.

it is pretty engrossing, and you get some really great boston accents, too.

tig notaro on fresh air

jicydak, comedienne tig notaro has been talked about a lot recently due to her now famous stand-up show back in august where she talked about the downward spiral her life had become after pneumonia turned into a terrible bacterial infection that almost killed her, her mother died, she and her gf broke up, and finally, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. read all about it here. louis ck tweeted that it was one of the few masterful stand-up performances he had witnessed.

this week, she appeared on fresh air, as did louis ck, to talk about the set and her prognosis.

you might remember about two weeks ago, the people of mississippi voted on the issue of defining "personhood", which was totes stupid and thank g-d the new law, which would ban almost all forms of birth control, did not pass.

did you ever wonder about the history of the birth control / conception debate? i know i hadn't! until now. terry interviews historian and new yorker contributor, jill lepore, who outlines the history of the planned parenthood movement, started by margaret sanger in the early 1900's. they cover fascinating topics like nineteenth-century contraception, tenement life, adultery, eugenics, black panthers, and more!

spoiler alert: the phrase "feeble-minded" definitely DOES enter the picture. enjoy!

she actually doesn't conduct this fresh air interview, but you know! i just listened to this episode from last week, and found the guest to be really fascinating:

In 1985, David M. Kennedy visited Nickerson Gardens, a public housing complex in south-central Los Angeles. It was the beginning of the crack epidemic, and Nickerson Gardens was located in what was then one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America.

"It was like watching time-lapse photography of the end of the world," he says. "There were drug crews on the corner, there were crack monsters and heroin addicts wandering around. ... It was fantastically, almost-impossibly-to-take-in awful."

Kennedy, a self-taught criminologist, had a visceral reaction to Nickerson Gardens. In his memoir Don't Shoot, he writes that he thought: "This is not OK. People should not have to live like this. This is wrong. Somebody needs to do something."

Kennedy has devoted his career to reducing gang and drug-related inner-city violence. He started going to drug markets all over the United States, met with police officials and attorney generals, and developed a program — first piloted in Boston — that dramatically reduced youth homicide rates by as much as 66 percent. That program, nicknamed the "Boston Miracle," has been implemented in more than 70 cities nationwide. (via)
